You beat me to it. It was a doozy, but no damage here in Half Moon Bay. It lasted about 15 seconds, so might have been pretty big somewhere. I'll be checking now.

My Tristar is on jack stands right now. Thankfully, it didn't fall off. I think I'll skip the axle/cv job tonight. Really. I'm taking the night off from car work. Ever here of a foreshock?

Not a big quake compared to the Loma Prieta quake in 1989 but I am still "jumpy" ever since that one. When the earth starts movin like that, I make like a track star and head for cover. That was the Alum Rock fault line. One that hasn't had activity for some time.

Castro Valley checking in. Lasted about 15 seconds more swaying than rolling. The house didn't make a sound. Weird to see the lazy boy slowly rocking back and forth with no one in it. Dogs went nuts for awhile.

When you get hit by a quake do you run out to the yard or street to get out from under potential hazards?

I didn't plan on running outside, but 3 of us got under a structural beam near where we were, and my 11-year-old daughter got under the desk where she was doing her homework.

Depends on where you happen to be. If you are on landfill, your house is going to fall down, which is good to know, but if it hits at 0500 and you get up at six to go to work that does not help much.

If you are in a solid structure, they say get in a doorway, stay away from windows if you can, don't take the elevator down if you are in a tall building. Even if you are in the street, maybe some old lady has a harp in her second story bay window and it falls out(I mention this, as it happened to a friend of mine, fortunately the harp was bigger than the window, and we pulled it back into her living room for her)

Don't turn on the lights until you are certain there are no gas leaks. Turn off your gas at the meter if it was bad and you are liable to have leaks, better cold than dead. If you live somewhere earthquakes are likely to happen, the phone book probably has a to do list, disaster kit(food, water, radio, flashlight, it was in that duck and cover movie as I recall)

In Cali, you don't put a mirror on the ceiling above the bed, if your smart. My house is as close as you can get to the I-5/State Route 14 overpasses that fell during the Northridge Earthquake. It put cracks in the pool and big cracks in the drywall in the vaulted ceiling in the family room. That was, what 12 years ago. Wood frame houses for the most part just sway. Didn't feel a thing tonight, but I'm several hundred miles south. The only room you really want to get out of is the kitchen, too much glass. bathroom too, I suppose.
