Two Story Tent a Reality! We Even Camped Out In It!

Here is the latest insanity. Our Boy came up with the idea and we spent a few week ends building it. Our first attempt wasn't that bad! I think we could have done a few things different but what the heck. Had a few extra parts just in case, along with a roll of 3M Duct tape. The 3rd level - the look out sling was used as a swing off a tree so it was never installed. We also didn't install all the windows we initally designed. The window flaps were held down with magnets. The camo tarp was from Harbor Freight and kept us very warm and dry - a great bargin.

During our first night in it, he looked up at it and said "geez Dad, we made this now were sleeping in it. I bet not too many kids can say that huh?"

Nope, not too many buddy!

Cool project.

Hey, just in case anyone is interested, I have been looking into backpacking tech. It's been nearly thirty years, and much has changed. It is now possible to backpack without a 70-lb pack. Indeed, ultra lightweight strategies can result in backpacks that weigh, sans food and fuel (consumables), nearly as low as ten pounds. Twenty is quite achievable. Some folks take a thin tarp instead of a tent. With packs this light, sturdy boots are not necessary.

I don't mean to hijack, but I just wondered if anyone is interested. Another universal tip is to take no cotton whatsoever. None. Zilch.

I have a few guys in Canada that want us to make afew for them to use on hunting trips. I think we could make some changes that would speed up the set-up and tear-down. I also think we could make these and sell fro around $500 and still make a little profit. Our Son thinks we can get a patent on it. I don't know about that. A little thing called "prior art" and all...

The sleeping level could be modified and the material of choice changed but all-in-all the proof of concept is sound.

People bought worse things right!

Bonus points if you can get a gun turret integrated into the top.

I think the attractiveness of most tents is that the connection of the floor to wall keeps things from crawling into the tent with you.

Something to think about.

Sorry don't mean to be negative, but what's the difference of this and trowing a cot into a regular tent?

You can crack jokes about "who was on top last night" afterwards.

Nope, not a 2-story tent until you can walk upright on the ground floor. Get back to work.

Yeah, you are a cool dad.

Very cool. Provides a lot more dry in-tent storage in a small package. It would be easy to add a floor to the proof of concept.

Cool dad!

Instead of a calling it a two story, I would bill it as a "Tent with a basement"

Perfect place to stow all your gear

not to nit pick but all it looks like it a sleeping shelf on top of a storage shelf.

great project, good luck on really building a 2 story tent. what you have there sure doesn't look like $500 worth of tent. looks like $10+/- tarp and some PVC piping.

you need to get yourself from telescoping carbon fiber tubing in place of that heavy bulky PVC.

Tarp = $50
PVC = $80 (pipe & joints)
Plywood = $25
Hardware = $10
Design by an 8 yr old, building the darn things on weekends and sleeping in it = Priceless

Many of the other Dads and Sons complained after the firest night that their sleeping bags were wet with the condensation. Being a foot and a half off the ground had its benefits.

As far as a cot goes, notice that the size of the bed is FULL, not twin. I guess there are full size cots...

All you need right here to be the coolest dad in the world.

I'm guessing these are roll-wrapped. I used to work for a pultrusion outfit. if you can find pultruded tubes, they'll probably be cheaper.
