Apple is Awesome!

bought my PowerBook G4 in October of 2004 and got the AppleCare protection which ran out a month ago, October 4.

Screen started flickering late today, then went black. Not a problem for basic work since I use a separate monitor, but any design work requires both.

Called AppleCare, they confirmed I wasn't covered. We went through some troubleshooting protocols, screen is bad and needs to be replaced. In between testing, the customer service woman and I are chatting, and I let her know I've used Macs since 1985. She was an Apple II girl. Says hold on, she wants to see if she can talk with a manager.

20 minutes later, she says "I've got authorization to send a box to pick it up, it will be completely repaired and sent back to you within in 5 business days at no cost. thank you for being a loyal customer."

how often does that happen?!

Score one big for Apple.

Nice!

I miss my old Apples, perhaps someday I may be willing to shell out big $$ again. OSX is excellent.

I agree. My 1st machine was an Apple II in about 1980. As I recall it, and its floppy drives cost almost as much in 1980 dollars as my MacBook Pro. Then I had maybe 6 or 7 windows machines over the next 27 or so years (software issues led me to the intel boxes).

I bought a MacBook Pro about 8 or 9 months ago. Finally talked into it by my graphic artist mac heads. Fully loaded with ram and the biggest hard drive I could buy. I bought office for Mac so I can still use Excel. Have been working with OSX since, and like it. My next machine will be another MacBook when they replace the HD with flash technology.

Soooooooo far I have not had one "osx has committed a fatal error and is shutting down" nor have I had any "green screens of death".

Even if my Dell and HP and Gateway friends tell me it is a fruity computer (the apple with a bite out of it on its cover) the apple does not have a worm coming out of it. I want to get some multicolor apple decals to stick on all of the new HP servers at work that are running unix.

Long live apple!! They just need to market OSX for Intel machines. To all of you Mac fans, why did they not do that yet?

Apple did do the license thing once before and it was an abysmal failure.

Quality control of the clones went right out the window.

It's not just the OS, it's also the hardware.

By controlling both they maintain quality and reliability.

They did something similar for me.

My 17 in MacBooks camera went on the fritz.

No biggie but figured let me get it fixed in warranty.

Guy says it'll take 10 days.

Told him no can do, every day I'm without it costs me money.

So I asked "what's the return policy on a new box" He says 14 days.

I told him to send mine back and sell me a new one and I'll return it when mine is fixed.

He excuses himself, walks into the back and comes back 5 minutes later.

Says "I just ordered the parts to repair your machine in house. When they show up I will call you. At your convenience bring in the machine and I promise it will be turned around in 24 hours or less. If that is not an option then you are welcome to take home a new one and return it. But we will still repair this one in a day."

I know they licensed people to make clones of the mac, but my mac has an intel chip.
And I could buy windows to run on the machine.
Why not install OSX on an intel machine made by Dell or HP?

If they didn't cover you likely could fix by replacing the inverter board. Common failure point on LCDs. It's always good to hear a company go above and beyond to keep a customer happy.

You can hack it. Not for the faint of heart though.

But why would you want to?

Part of the problem that MSFT have is the OS needs to operate on an almost infinite combination of components. Windows would be much more stable if the hardware were controlled.

Hardware also becomes obsolete. Everyone replaces it sooner or later.

If a consumer wants to switch to OS X they can just buy a Mac. If they don't like OS X they can always install Windows on it and they'll still have a quality piece of hardware.

It just seems to me that MSFT needs a serious competitor in the marketplace, and Apple coulda adn shoulda been it.

I'll say it again: Just look at what the share price has done in the past two years. Can you say 1000%? (almost)

I must know 20 people who have switched to Apple in the past year or two - and my guess is this trend will continue.

Let's talk in two years.

Who would have "thunk" it?

US PC Market Share:

From Ars technica:
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20071018-dell-staunches-the-market-share-bleeding-while-apple-sees-big-growth.html

Of course, Apple has over twice the market cap of Dell and continues to grow PC market share at a quickening pace.

Apple is somewhere on the fulcrum of this tipping point now, IMHO.

Best,

Kurt

David:

It's a lecture hall at the U. of Missouri School of Journalism.

How about that?

how things have changed. My comparable organic chemistry lecture hall looked like something out of the Spanish Inquisition, our professor certainly was.

I've Switched just about every person who asks me what kind of computer to buy, esp. since Vista came out.

Which is funny, since I run Linux on my PCs and on my daughters G3 iMac (bad DVD drive, can't install OS X over a network....)

Yes Apple Rules, I now have three neighbours that have asked me what to buy, it's a no brainer: Mac excellent OS, you can get into the Unix kernel to run real stuff, run OpenSource office products so you don't have to pay MS for anything. They're support is excellent and the community is the best (albeit biggoted)

If I have to run an Windoz apps I can fire up virtual PC (Non-intel Mac) and run them there, best of all worlds.

My only gripe is trying to run terminal applications program that require a serial interface, I still can't do it and I need this for Router, FW's, switches etc.

stealthn - USB to serial converter and an Ubuntu livecd for ppc ... boot to Linux, plug in your USB serial device, and you are good to go...
