A coworker of mine and his wife were murdered in their home.

I'm totally in shock over this. Brian and Beverley were the last people that I would have thought would be a target for this. Hopefully the authorities can figure this out soon. http://www.komotv.com/news/local/11541841.html

Wow.

I saw this in today's paper, but it didn't really hit home until seeing your post. It's just a news story until there is a personal connection.

I wish you well.

Bizarre stuff. There was a brutal axe murder in my tiny town of 2700 in TX when I was about 9. We knew every single person in the town, so we all assumed the perp was among us. It was terrifying for a few weeks. The incident was such common knowledge, that the local newspaper never bothered to write about it. Turned out the perp was the husband's mistress and she killed his wife. They made a movie about it with Brian Denehy many years later.

Wow, so sorry to hear that. A good friend of mine retired to Sedona, AZ two years ago, and he hired some guys at the U-Haul place to unload the truck. The next night, they broke in, did all sorts of things to the wife and then bludgeoned them both to death. They got caught with my friend's BMW in their driveway on the otherside of town the next day.

I am sorry for this tragedy, to close to home for me. I live within a few miles. Rural Pierce County where this occured has a spotted record. Nice nieghborhoods, good people living next to pockets of meth making maggots. This is another case of why I keep loaded weapons in the house. If your lucky typical sheriff response is an hour for somebody breaking into your home. WaA420 I am sorry this happened to your friend and his wife.

Agreed. The two stories above demonstrate the need in this day/age. I'm never more than 5 steps away from a firearm when home and always strap when outside the home.

Man, I am so glad I don't have to live like that. It must be a horrible feeling not feel secure. I would suppose that you are accustomed to it, but still.

Sorry to hear that. Do you the death penalty for murder in your state?

You do live like that...you may not realize it, but you do. Australia's gun ban may have taken your gun away, but the bad guys still have them.

"It" can happen in any neighborhood in the world...any time. You're whistling in the dark to believe otherwise.

This came home to me when there was an armed and dangerous murder suspect running around my quiet rural neighborhood for a few days. I didn't leave the house without being armed with either my hi-power or my mini-14...often both. I kept the hi-power near me at all times.

It was like living in a ghost town...neighbors in contact by phone, nobody going out unarmed, traffic up and down the road nil....

Our local sheriff? Pretty worthless...this very bad guy escaped his "roadblock", was captured later more than 100 miles from here.

Wow, condolences to you and the victims families.

This is not few hours drive from my house, even though I am in a different country. I guess I need to re think my beliefs on ones requirements for a personal fire arm........

Cheers

what I meant was, I don't have to have loaded firearms around my house or carry one with me. I know sh$t happens anywhere and everywhere, but in some places it's less likely than others

One of my wife's former employees met a guy on the internet. They met, dated, married. Moved back up to Canada to his home. Shortly thereafter, he brutally murdered her. It is surreal reading about people you know in the national news. Especially in the past tense.

Do you guys think having a dog (rather than having a gun) would help deter this?

Well, if I were willing to commit two counts of murder 1, I probably wouldn't hesitate to kill the dog too.

Dogs will help deter random break-ins and thefts. The article gave the impression that this was not a random act of violence. I have to agree with Rick here.

I don't think there are too many cases of random, in-home double murders. Could be a case of mistaken identity, but this couple was likely targeted and likely by a very determined person or persons. In that case, there's nothing that could have prevented this other than the victims being able to defend themselves. Dogs, security systems, mace, rape whistle, whatever. Those things are like trying to prevent or put out a fire with a towel. It may work, but it's no match for a fire extinguisher. Guns are the same when it comes to home defense. When you need one, there is absolutely no substitute.

I agree with Rick too on this one...probably wasn't random at all. Unfortunately, even "most" dogs aren't much of a deterent as we tend to socialize them and a "treat" will shut them up. My neighbor's door was brazenly kicked in one afternoon a few months ago (it wasn't random), with no one home. One of her dogs (still being crated) probably shortened their stay with his barking, but her husband found her "big 'ol friendly" lab outside on the back deck when he got home.

If I didn't have kids (and their friends) around all the time, I would have a few shotguns secreted in various spots around the house. While the odds of a home invasion are very, very low - something like winning the lottery - the downside of being prepared in this manner are low.

With kids, the math is different. The downside now includes children finding the guns and accidentally shooting selves or others. So now the guns have to be locked up - but a loaded pistol lives in my bedside gunsafe with a combination keypad.
