If it's new & the drive is full & you haven't been downloading like a mad man, you have some bad stuff on your machine.

Dear Afterburn,
Delete 160 Gig of porn. Abby ps: Seriously, do you know your way around a pc? What is consuming most of the 1st drive (it sounds like you have two drives)? Do you have a restoration cd? Last edited by KFC911; 11-21-2007 at 08:15 AM.. |

How long have you been using this machine? |

First place is to look under your Start->Programs->Startup folder and delete anything in there that you don't use. Not to worry as the items there are generally shortcuts to the actual programs. Next use the windows add/remove programs tool to remove ALL programs you don't use. Brand name PCs (Dell, HP, etc...) always have a ton of free/trial stuff already installed. Smoke all of it.
Are you saying the HD is full? How much empty space did it have when you first got the laptop? How much memory is installed and being used? My neighbor had a similar slow running PC and I found his kids installed software that launched at startup and consumed all the memory causing the OS to start swapping to the HD. Machine was unuseable in that state. |

Respectfully, don't start deleting programs unless you know your way around. First look at the drive(s), and see what's taking up the space (probably not programs). If you don't know how to do that, then is there someone that can help you?
ps: I'm not saying David's suggestions aren't spot on, but they shouldn't be done haphazardly. Last edited by KFC911; 11-21-2007 at 08:35 AM.. |

Probably the biggest problem this was the demo @ Costco..I did not think there would be much on it....I have looked and see not more then the usual stuff.....

The first thing I'd do with a demo is slick the HD and start fresh. I'm not familiar with HP laptops but my IBM has software to restore the PC to it's factory original state with a single button press plus it can image the state of the system for easy restore. Investigate this option on your HP.
Sage advice from Keith too. Was talking about all the trial software and stuff like "AOL free for 90 days" etc... So much crap... |

Assuming it's your "c" drive, under properties, how much space is used & free? If virtually none is "free" then go into the drive itself and see what is consuming the largest "chunks" to get some idea as to what has gobbled it up.
ps: If David's idea about restoring isn't feasible on your HP, do you have a "system restore" cd? Time to try it out ![]() Last edited by KFC911; 11-21-2007 at 08:53 AM.. |

If its been a demo machine then you need to get the "Rescue" CD/DVD that came with the unit. Then format the "C" drive and wipe everything off of it and start fresh using the rescue disk.
You have no idea what all is on the computer and it could be sending your passwords and such out over the internet. Start fresh and do it right. 160 gigs is a lot of room and there is a lot of crap on the hard drive that should not be there.

Wipe it clear and reload the data from the D:hp_recovery drive using the HP PC System recovery application found in the PC help and tools group of applicatons. This will bring it back to how it was when it left HP.
OR better yet upgrade to XP if you have less than 2Gb of ram. |

You might also see if there is an old restore point. Make sure you know what you're doing if you proceed with this option....

As a final option Costco has an excellent return policy. Exchange it for another laptop if you continue to have issues.
