snow
First snow today.
Fall is always so busy, just getting ready for winter. The last few weeks I've: -Raked an insane amount of maple leaves -Limed the lawn -Put the winter tires on Regret-a-Jetta -Got Regret-a-Jetta inspected... brake lines, suspension bushings, exhaust. Also put in new glow plugs & starter -Sealed up any drafty windows ("windles", local vernacular) -Stacked 4 cords of firewood in the basement -Cleaned the chimney ("chimley", local vernacular) -Welded up the snow plow for Sammy the Samurai So finally, the snow hit us today. They are calling for 10-20cms. That's cool with me... I'm done all my work and now I can just enjoy the winter. Big fires, long nights. ![]() ![]() ![]() You guys ready for winter? What are your winter rituals? I suppose for many of you, that just mean driving with the top up!

My winter ritual is to pray for an early spring.

You don't eat a lot of bugs and enter suspended animation right before you freeze?

I think I'll go for a nice walk on the beach later in shorts and a t-shirt.
This is the time of year that all the bad aspects of living in CA really get made up for. The only "snow" I like is the stuff I can see up on the top of Mount Baldy, where it's far, far away from me and only contributes to making a nice backdrop for the city.

Can you see Mt. Baldy from where you are? I lived directly south of it (IIRC) in La Verne, right up against the foothills. I remember driving up there one winter because my dad wanted to show up snow...

Hey Jake,
We got our first 'real' snow last night here on the West coast too. What a blast! Dumped over a foot all at once. The kids were out until midnight playing; I think there was about a dozen teenagers over here yesterday drinking hot chocolate and playing outside. I dragged out the snow blower last night about 9 PM, I only use it a couple times a year, just the big dumps, but she fired up right away and did a great job. Got my wifes garage cleaned out so she can park in there now. Still have to tighten up a couple drafty doors. I stuck my head out the door and took this pic....... ![]() I'll come to visit you next year when I'm in NB visiting my daughter. You can hopefully meet her too; she's an amazing lady!! Cheers, |

By the way, I meant to thank you for pointing out that Carrera decklid in the classifieds a few weeks back, I bought it for dad's car. Thanks! Hey Rob: There's a Hummer in your driveway, was there a rap star or pimp visiting?!? Just kidding! Yes, make sure to PM me when you come to town!

Jake,
Looks like a very lovely place to spend the winter, both inside and outside. Southern coast of Sweden is tricky this season. The basic climate is dictated from a collision between ice cold wheather from the Russian continent and mild, rainy wheather from the Atlantic. We typically get snow that lasts first in mid January. Before that it is all darkness, cold, windy and in best case (most days) rainy. Halleluja..

Heh, heh; Yeah we're pimpin'.
You never know, maybe one day I'll be living in NB. My grandson....."do you like that house Grandpa? Why don't you buy it and move here?" My only grandkids live right there buddy; once the youngest one moves out it'll be pretty quiet around here? I can see making a real estate investment there anyway; with the refinery plans and all. Our kids were selling us on the place the entire time we were there..... too funny. I moved my wifes entire family from Montreal to BC; now I'm gonna get paid back by my son-in-law who grew up there. Cheers, |

My wife's family cottage is right on the water, you want to talk about nice property winter or summer. 2 acres, private beach on either side, built in 1906 with 5 bedrooms. Bought for a song back in the 60's. Some nice winter pics: ![]() That little outbuilding to the right is the original ice house. 12" walls filled with sawdust. They'd have locals fill it with ice in the winter, and it would last until August. Still intact, with sawdust, racks & pulleys to haul the ice. Neat stuff As much as northerners like to complain about the cold, it's kind of a nice change. I think I'd go batty without REAL seasons. It's nice to watch the landscape change, and there's nothing like being outside in the cold. Going for a walk in 12" snow is a pretty serious workout! ![]()

A lifetime in Roachester New York subjected me to a lot of that frozen atmosphere. For the first few snowfalls (around Christmas) it is a novelty. By February it gets old fast. Strangely, out here in AZ I find I have become a weather wuss. Anything under 65 and I reach for the jacket. Back east, a 65 day would have us dancing in the streets!!
Beautiful home you have here.

I used to love to light a cigarette outside just after a fresh snow fall but now that I'm older, and understand the negative effects of tobacco, I dont' anymore.
