Slightly off the off topic:

Steve & Cam, I think the problem with importing the MGB V8's into New Zealand was to do with the new RV8, not the old BGTV8's, which would simply be just old classic cars. Apparently there was a problem with type approval or crash testing on the RV8's. Their limited production and lack of new testing did not agree with our vehicle importing laws. This became a problem when people tried to import Japanese RV8s along with all the other crap we get from there. Luckilly (?) a few had already sneaked through, so we have a couple being driven daily.
Pity the poor MGC owner who needs a new bonnet nowdays; I heard they modified the original pressing to make the steroidal new RV8 alloy bonnet.

Rest assured, we have an abundance of hot, well priced cars in this country.

On a slightly more political note (I'm getting carried away with cars...), I'm kinda glad at the moment that I'm living in a little rock pool over here, watching the sea carefully every day, yet hopefully learning from it's errors rather than just forgetting about it.

Ok, I have to weigh in my 2 cents on this issue. First, I'm glad that there do seem to be a lot of responsible and educated opinions on this posting, along with a bunch of irresponsible idiots who can only quote selected parts of the Constitution and are so narrow minded they probably haven't even bothered to read the "rest" of the constitutional amendments. No, I'm not a liberal, I'm a die-hard concervative. I've worked in both the Reagan and Bush, Sr. administration and after that have been in law enforcement for 15 years (no, I'm not a porn star). I obviously own several firearms, I'm trained in SWAT and Sniper trained. And I believe in GUN CONTROL, meaning only RESPONSIBLE citizens should be ALLOWED to own guns. Not drunks walking in to Hooters, or amendment spouting idiots who are only thinking of themselves and how much firepower they can get their hands on. Remember, when "our right to bear arms" came into being, we only had muskets. I agree with our friends across the pond, this problem of ours is out of control now and there is no easy solution. I've also spent over 17 years overseas working in countries where the "common criminals" used Ak-47s and grenades to do car jackings (If you didn't stop when you saw the AK, you'd get a free grenade under your car). So in answer to the original thread; be responsible, get a license, and my recommendation for all around use, if you think you have to own a gun, a licensed SIG SAUER 226. Oh, and as for that "great" bumper sticker,.. how about a more responsible one like "control your kids and your guns".

I read some of the stuff on this thread. I could hardly stomach some of the 'patriotic tripe' that was spewed. 'I'm an American and I'm supposed to own a hand gun'. Yeah ok whatever.
Emcon5's post about it not being a gun problem but a culture problem is the nearest thing to the truth I've heard. It's not the guns it's the people behind the trigger. The person to blame in that SanDiego shooting is the childs father. No one ever says blame the parents because the mass media wont dare kill the sacred cow. Who else watches the TV?, the parents. Columbine was the parents fault for not listening to their children, for not taking an active stance in their kids lives. I'm talking about both sides here also, the parents of the kids who were the victims as well. Those parents didnt teach their kids how to respect one another. The parents of the shooters didnt listen to their kids enough. The teachers never took any active action to try to close the rift between the 'have and have nots'. Favrotism at its best. There is some stupid elitist Gap moronic mentality that pervades this nation. Which all trickles down into the remotest parts of our lives if we dont listen to ourselves. The mass media would never ever question the adults behind all this because 'grown ups' == consumers and the customer is *always* right.
Now, what also gets under my skin is that heaven forbid someone should breath a word of gun control it's hailed as 'UNAMERICAN!!'. Bull****. That is the most stupidist way to convince anyone on gun ownership. I'm anti-SUV, someone once said there proud to be an American so bring them on. No, all that means is that person is proud to be a consumer (I prefer to call them suckers).
Now before some of you wacko's start sending me flak about my stance on guns I suggest you take your computer and shoot some holes in it.
I plan on owning a pistol and maybe a shotgun. Both locked up nice and tight. I also plan on teaching my 12 year old sister to shoot. My mom is all for it. When I was younger my mom took me to Coney Island and there was one of those little shooting ranges. My mom taught me how a rifle is used at that range. I must have been around 10 years old at the time and was a good shot, still am. Personally I dont know why people need to collect a ****load of weapons. If the goverment wants to come in the are coming in.
Now, the stupid comment about a person going back to ones country, what kind of **** is that? Who the **** died and left you king?. This is 'land belongs just as much as the person who arrived here yesterday as the person who has been here in colonial times.
In fact I would go far as to say that the people who arrived here in colonial times belong here as much as the people who came here yesterday. Lest we forget Native Americans. Funny how the same people who yack about Nazi's seem to conveniently forget the 'ethnic cleansing' that took place during that time in 'merican history. The blood is just as much on Americans hands as it is on the Nazi's hands. In fact Americans eliminated more Natives during those times then the Nazi's did their damange to 'non believers' in that 8 year period.
Now before I get labled a Nazi by some yucka puck redneck let me enlighten some of you. I'm from Russia a Russian Jew. My grandfather had a big family, something like 8 brothers and 1 sister. Execpt for him, his brother and his sister they were all killed when the Nazi's invaded Odessa. They were given to the Nazi's by the neighbors. Imagine that their own neighbors. My grandmothers brother was in the Russian army during those times and he had a bounty on his head by the Nazi's because he killed so many of them. Something I'm proud of and in my opinion he didnt kill enough of them. Out of all people to take his life, he too was given up by the neighbors because he was sought by the KGB for abonding his unit. What actually happened was that he was seperated. My grandmother hated Russia all her life and it never wavered when she died in 2000. I harbor the same feeling because of the destructive selfish nature of such a country. If you want to call me a communist you can suck my dick first.

YOU and I are the problem.

Society accepts and embrasses violence. We see killing on the news, it is glamorized in the movies, and sung about on the radio. Since YOU and I buy tickets to the violent movies and watch the violent shows on TV Hollywood will continue to indidate our culture with these scenes that have an impact on the youth of today.

Until YOU and I change ourselves we will see this continue to happen. YOU and I, to a certain degree, are our brothers keepers.

I have a copy of the complete Constitution at home which I reference from time to time and have no idea how that document can be so rediculously misinterpreted. YOU and I are free to do almost anything as long as we do not infringe on others rights. The government has created programs and laws that are not in the Constitution nor in the best interest of the people, IMHO. I have never seen an IRS ammendment, which violates peoples liberties and would never stand up in count to its ill dealing with YOU and I as consumers if it were a private company.

Steve: I have one question for you. If the CIA came to your house "hunting" Catholics(arbitrarily picked) and the agent said they would kill your oldest child if you do not cooperate, or find that you are lying and come back to kill the child... What would you do? My job is to protect my family in whatever way keeps us together. Sure, the situation was horrible, but what other reasonable options did those people have?

I have:

1944 K98 Mauser (German WWII rifle, brought back by a vet, I have both the duffle cut stock and a fully restored one) This is one of the big reason I got a 911, love the amazing engineering of it.

As a side note. If you like highpower rifles and german engineering (who doesn't here), I can't say enough about the K98. Go check out http://www.infantryrifles.com They can be had for dirt cheap and are a true piece of history.

I don't shoot nowadays, due to having little kids at home - the hassle of safeguarding the weapons and finding the time to get to the range, you know - but when I did this is what I liked:

- most accurate: an old P08 Parabellum (aka Luger). This was a shooter, pieced together from two guns, I had the feed ramp, trigger and sights worked on, and it was sweet! On the other hand, it wouldn't reliably feed hollow-points or the unjacketed reloads you buy for cheap at the range, and even on its preferred diet it would start stove-piping after appx 200 rounds.

- most reliable: Glock 19. When I bought this gun, I intentionally did not clean it. I wanted to see what would happen. After six months, appx 5000 rounds, and no malfunctions, I finally gave in and started cleaning the gun. I have so much respect for the Glocks. Eventually I installed a laser sight. Shortly thereafter I put the guns away and the laser sight spent its remaining days tormenting the cats, who chased but could never catch the little red dot.

- most fun: Ruger Single-Six in .22 cal. I just like that clicking mechanical feel of cocking and firing a single-action. This was the one I took on trips out to the desert to plink away - cheap, not too noisy. And the one time I actually needed to kill something - a rabid skunk in my back yard - a .22 short was efficient and safe. Really inaccurate though, I think because my hand always ended up in a slightly different position after reaching up to to cock the hammer.

Some guns my friends had:
- not so great: Ruger .22 cal auto pistol with bull barrel. Heavy to hold, kind of tinny feeling to the action. I didn't like it.
- a little jewel: Beretta .380. What a nice, compact, crisp little gun.

If I ever get back into shooting, I'd like to get a Mauser 1896 aka Broomhandle. A co-worker collected and traded them, he used to call me down to his office to check out the interesting gun of the day. Like a full-automatic Broomhandle, that was pretty cool.

My family loves target shooting and our circumstances make carrying advisable.
I have a Hammerli 208 for target shooting and Sig 232 for carry.
My daughter has a FAS 602 (my husband, Armando bought this for himself but had it expropriated) for target shooting and carries a 32 acp Beretta model 70.
Armando usually carries a Sig 229, I think it's a 9X21 (No 9mm para in Italy), has another 208 for target shooting, he also has a Sig 210 in 7.65 para, a Colt 1911 in 45HP, and a selection of rifles and shotguns that don't interest me and are always changing.

I barely shoot anymore but I used to shoot pistol (pin shooting) enough that I had to take a month off a year from shooting to let my lead levels go down (couldn't stand to wear a resperator). Now I just shoot sporting clays a few times a year.

In Maine where I grew up, people had deer rifles in the windows racks of their (unlocked) trucks and chainsaws in the back. They were just tools. I suppose if someone's only exposure to these tools was violent movies you might associate guns with criminals and chainsaws with chainsaw murderers.

I go shooting with my Porsche club friends. One of them is pictured prominently in the back of every Pano...

This whole post reminds me of the "discussion" I had with my brother in law regarding his opinion on high performance sports cars and SUV's. His position is they should not be sold as they are inherently dangerous, are easily missused, cause numerous deaths each year, and furthermore society pays for the burden of these in the form of increased taxes, insurance, and other. To say the least, I was dumbfounded (but not surprised)....he has the same position regarding firearms.

OH DEAR...Guns....Like to shoot Black Powder...last time out shot my English Volunteer Rifle...577...essentially a 2 Band Officers Musket from the Civil War. Or try a 71/84 Mauser in 11mm. Am looking forward to getting some 22 shorts for my Winder Musket, and a box or 2 of 22 WRF for my Remington 12C...with octagaon Barrel.
