Not the point, I guess, no relationship between ease of obtaining guns and shootings such as San Diego.....my mistake....just focus on the crime guns prevent? Guns need to be removed from society, firstly, criminals' guns. There's no place for them, but there is in a Society like the US. Crime has gone too far I think, people are frightened and feel in is necessary for protection. I don't know what can make that better. Hmmm...I'd probably get shot somewhere for saying that to a gun owner....wonder where....??? ------------------ '75 911S Targa http://member.aol.com/asaffery/my911s.html |
it seems logical that countries with gun control like Australia, Great Britain, etc. would have lower rates of violent crime, but actually that's not the case.
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=21902 it seems when law-abiding citizens have guns, the society is safer. as a burgler, would you rather break into a house where you know the owner is armed or a house where you know the owner isn't? it's tough when we have preconceived ideas built up by many years of misinformation. I have to agree with you Saffs, this whole gun thing in the US seems so far removed from what we consider to be 'normal' in the UK.
Personally, I was shocked as a child on vacation in FL to see guns for sale in K-Mart three isles over from the toy section I was looking at! And to whether we should be discussing Porsches or gun control; this board is refreshing in the thought that goes into the posting, and I always find it interesting reading about the views from other (fairly) like-minded types. The only problem is we are not paying for the bandwidth we are taking with all this moral posturing... One last thing: why is liberal a dirty word? ------------------ '72 911E Sporto [This message has been edited by layzee (edited 03-06-2001).] |

273 times as many people are killed by cars as are by guns in the US. (NSTB)
Don't hear the liberals ranting about banning cars, now do we? Of course not, that is TOTALLY different. LOL I wish all liberals would go move in with Tony Blair and leave those of us that have fought for freedom alone. Do not try changing America (or me) because you think you know how to save me from myself. Heal thy self, physician... Ok - I'm done. Anyone here own a Porsche? I'd love to hear about it! |
Any MGB-GT V-8?NZ Custom's Book says They are prohibited from importation? Steve
|
Oh, the problem with the MGB-GT V8 will be if it is left-hand drive. Cars have to be more than about 20 years old before LHD is ok, or owned by the importer for a minimum period of about 3-6 months. I forget exactly.
I have seen both 70's and 90's (ex Japan) MGB V8's here. Generally we have really lax car importing laws. Anyone can do it, only 12.5% GST to pay (no duty). Even LHD is ok if the car is old enough (like as in a 70's 911, hmmmmm.) More than half the newly registered cars on our road each year are second hand imports from Japan. We got lots and lots of high performance Japanese cars. I mean even parallel importing is ok. No handguns or automatic rifles though. And is an MGB V8 actually high powered, or just adequately powered http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/wink.gif. There are a couple of references to them in NZ at the MG car club: http://www.mgcarclub.org.nz/ Cam |
layzee,
I get the impession liberal is a dirty word and some here will criticise people if they think they are being liberal. Free speech ehh....? "I wish all liberals would go move in with Tony Blair...." was in an earlier post....nice attiude.... [This message has been edited by Saffs (edited 03-06-2001).] |
Even liberals have the right to free speech!
They are just wrong about everything they say! http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/wink.gif |
Liberal is a filthy four letter word!
I am all for government leaving me alone and only providing the infrastructure and defense of our nation. The fundamental flaw in liberals thinking is that they want to "help" people and make a big socialist government. I think less government and less taxes is better. Hunger is a powerful motivator for people to improve themselves! I support free trade only with countries that provide open trade for the US. China can kiss it! I think it is amazing how the liberals scream 1st amendment rights until someone disagrees with thier outrageous views. Can you say Rush Limbaugh and Dr. Laura? Free speach is a two way street. I could go on, but I will go back to p-car stuff... Steve S., I think you are on the right track! Amen! Peas, ------------------ Adrian Pillow 1979 911 SC 1966 VW Microbus PCA - Peachstate Region |
this reminds me of the not-so-recent
"I HATE ALL REPUBLICANS" thread put just 3 people in a room and you will see 3 different points of view. god-forbid that Cheney should croak, but to make everyone happy we should appoint Charlie I-really-want-to-be-Moses Heston to be his replacement. I have guns, too. I am ultra-left(commie) with a PORSCHE attitude I am really sick, I have no-cardonitis, dead battery ------------------ simon d 911-t.70 |
This has been an interesting thread. I found myself angry for a few hours after my last post. I just noticed it. Thinking of some of the extreme views, the critical focus if you dare to appear "liberal" and the barrage of unpleasant messages after a posting (one quote "I support free trade only with countries that provide open trade for the US. China can kiss it!")
None of my "real life" friends with cars are as unpleasant as this - and this is from people I don't know on the BBS!. I'm disappointed I think, really, the camaraderie seems nonexistent. Not experienced this in a lifetime of interest in cars and going to car shows, plus numerous friends I've made through cars....There's a distinct unfriendly and narrow minded air, and very patriotic and not exactly "World embracing"....I'm surprised some owners drive non-American cars! Very sad and time to take a break from the BBS..... |
I quote STEVE STROMBERG from a previous post: "You who live in the EU live under SOCIALISIUM not FREEDOM, blaha, blaha..."
Are you for real??????????? There ARE exceptions, my friend, but this statement shows how ill educated when it comes to the world outside the US many (NOT all!) americans are... how about picking up a history book, or watching some international news occationally?... |
I agree with Saffs.
Increasingly, I am leaving this BBS with a bad taste. The narrow-minded xenophobic attitudes of people like VIPR are just depressing. The amount of references to war, guns, the colonies and the nazis is disturbing. We left all this behind in Europe years ago. Lets talk about cars, not killing, death, war, rape and all the other crap that's contaminating this board. Get a life guys! |
Saffs, don't get put off by a few ultra-vocal right wingers; they don't represent the feeling of the board.
Also remember that not all Americans are like this - just look at Clinton's success in previous elections. Also, by its very definition, all of you praising free speech are being liberal. Allowing people to vote = liberal, I could go on. |
