Internet Explorer for Vista Help

I've had problems with my Vista machine since I loaded the antivirus software from CA. I unloaded it and bought McAfee, recently I've had problems with IE opening a lot of sites. For example, I went to Mozilla and on their home page, the icon that on my other computer says "Download Mozilla for free" doesn't even appear. Also lots of other sites that I click on nothing happens. My wife set a restore point far enough back that it no longer sees the McAfee either. Gateway says I should reinstall the operating system, which I'd rather not do if I don't have to. Its supposed to be a 64 bit processor, but when I went to the microsoft site it says the IE version 7 for 64 bit won't work on my computer.

Any help would be appreciated.

My guess is you have an AMD processor. And just because your processor is 64 bit capable, that doesn't mean you have the 64 bit OS version. Try the standard 32 bit version.

If that doesn't work, you may have to reload Vista. And when you do, install AVG antivirus after everything is running correct. It is free for personal use, btw.

Thanks, I just tried that and when I get to IE version 7 to down load, it says I already have it installed? I though I could over-write it to cure what is ailing it.

Candidly I would reload Vista. I know it is a royal PITA but this way you can keep all the pre-loaded Gateway stuff off of it. Put all the patches on and then AVG. You should be good to go.

Also, go ahead and use the Windows Easy Transfer wizard to save any files and setting you may have in place. Actually a decent, but not perfect, utility.

Hugh,

Try going to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove programs, check "Show Updates". You should be able to see Internet Explorer 7 and highlight, giving you the option to repair it.

Dave

Best thing you can do with IE is replace it with Mozilla Firefox.

I also am curious as to why you would use IE when Firefox is available.

Because not all web pages render properly under Firefox.

I had firefox on my old computer, but haven't gotten around to installing it on the new one. My problem right now appears to be with IE not recognizing popups on certain screens. As I said earlier, when I got to Mozilla, the icon to download firefox just simply isn't there. Thanks Dave, I'll try your suggestion when I get home.

Hugh,
If this is a pre-loaded Vista PC then I don't think you can do Slodave's suggestion, IIRC, IE7 is tied in tight to Vista, I think the only way you can repair IE7 is with the Vista CD (smart)

The problem may be a add-on, try to start IE7 with no add ons
Start> All programs> accessories> system tools> Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)

I run FF and have not run into any problem's, you don't need IE to work to download/install FF

Here is a link to download the .exe install
http://mozilla2.mirrors.tds.net/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/2.0.0.11/win32/en-US/Firefox%20Setup%202.0.0.11.exe

Let us know

I had the same problem with Vista when trying to install Firefox. I ended up downloading Firefox on another computer then transferring the file to the new computer. IE kept blocking the download icon just like you mentioned.

Interesting, maybe Microsoft blocks firefox now. Still having problems with other sites. I'll tackle it again this evening when I get home. Thanks everyone for the help.

Ok, try this: Start/ Programs/ Accessories/ System Tools/ Internet explorer (No Add Ons). From IE, go to TOOLS. Internet Options. Advanced. At the bottom, Reset Internet Explorer.

Maybe .2% of the sites that I go to have some formatting issue. The rest are just fine...
