Holy Blow

From the website of THE OREGONIAN:

Monster storm bears down on Oregon
A system expected Sunday may bring hurricane-force winds and widespread flooding
» Read the story
» Current conditions, forecast
» Winter driving tips, traffic advisories
» National Weather Service

So, we're stockpiling water, since no power means no water when you're on a well.

Woodshed full, so heat for the woodstove

Plenty of batteries for the flashlights and radio

lots of kerosene for the lamps

both propane bottles full for the BBQ

Any tips from Guys in Florida and Lousiana? We don't get high hurricane winds here often.

Oh...and if I don't post next week? I'm not mad...I'll just be without power.

Plywood for the windows if you don't have storm shutters. Also, sand bags if you have a potential for flooding around the house. I was born and raised in Tampa, been there done that.

Yes, a generator would be good to have as well. At the very least for keeping a cell phone charged.

if not a generator at least get an inverter. 400 watts will run lights, fans, stereos, TV. I usually rent several movies before the hurricane to watch until it blows over. hooked to your car you can get at least 8 hours power before battery goes down. just crank the car every couple hours to recharge before that point. I have 400, 600 and 1000 watt inverters. cheapest is about $30. we're usually the only ones on the block with lights and music during the storm. actually.. we're usually the only ones on the block. everyone leaves for some reason. 150+mph winds are pretty good entertainment sitting on the porch watching trees fall and roofs fly off.

I wish you best of luck, pwd.

Although I opened the thread associating the title somewhat differently. Along the line of a Pope-Lewinsky theme..

You've pretty much got it down.

The essentials are:
Water
Non-Perishable Food (food bars, cereal, dry pasta, gatorade)
Cooler with Ice and a couple days worth of frozen meat in your freezer
Stuff to stay hot or cold, depending on whats going in (sounds like you need heat)
Light
Portable TV
Boatload of batteries and fuel. Put gas in every vehicle, and in every container you own. Gas can become a huge problem after power outages.

Past that come the luxuries. 'Gererators' are obviously great. Inverters, as suggested, are awesome too, at least for small appliances. Barbeque sauces and spices, board games, guns are all good too. Chainsaws, sawzalls, good.

As for house prep, board your windows. Worth every last penny. Good luck!

EDIT- You need scotch.

down here it's also a good idea to fill up the tub before the storm. we go days without water and power everytime and it's nice to have enough water to clean up and flush the toilet

Been through three hurricanes in 14 years on the Potomac...two Class I's and one Class II. Total time without grid power (with and without the 'canes) about a month.

Total time without power: zippy.

Get a generator, even a small one.

you don't need bottled water. Buy several large garbage cans and put plastic liners in them. Put in the bathtub and fill with water.Andb I thought this was a drug thread...

Yeah, Scott, I do. From using them three days out of four the last twentyfive years. You figure it out!
