Tacking With A Smith
Last month I went to SO CA, while there a friend took me out to his local Skeet range and shot a coupla rounds of Skeet with his new 28 Bore Krieghoff . I got to shoot a 12 Bore, Crown Grade L C Smith SXS. That got me to thinkin, "OUUU this is sumthin I gotta do."
I have never really been into shotspoons, other than owning a coupla of Parkers, L C Smiths and a Fox. So now I have been lookin around to see whats what. I want to stay with nothin but the old timey doubles. To that end I have been lookin at all my usual places with an eye out for them. A week ago while at my local GS..I noticed a near new early 50s, 20 Bore Winchester mdl 21 for 5500 out the door. Since mdl 21s are slow movers I decided to pass on that shotspoon. The name Parker keeps ringin in my ears especially in the small bores, 28 and 410. However if any of you follow the genre your well aware that a new Porsche can appear to be cheap by comparison. So in that case I would be happy to settle for reproductions that were made in Japan. To that end, I came across a 28 Bore Parker repro at auction, I was the underbidder on it at 4K. The knock on that paticular spoon was that the owner had put a recoil pad on the spoon. That hurt the price bad on that spoon, cause like commeratives or limited editions nearly every body keeps them in unaltered, pristine condition. That set me up for the new spoon that I did aqquire. A very nice 12 Bore, Speciality Grade , Single Barrel L C Smith Trap Spoon. These spoons were made from 1917 till 1950 when L C Smith finally bit the dust and are considered to be rare with only 2666 spoons being made. Back in the day L C Smith was the spoon to beat in Trap competition shooting as most of the winners were shooting the Elsies. While being rare, their value is not as great as a comparable double. This paticular spoon was made in the mid 20s, and I can hardly wait to take her out and give her a go. BTW: Currently published price structures on many of these old timey spoons can be very misleading as published values are low in comparison to prices that are readily paid. ![]() ![]()

My brother picked up a perfect vintage Krieghoff O/U set with the 4 skeet barrels in 12, 20, 28 and .410 in a leather hard case, velvet lined for $2800 a few years back. God knows what its worth.
