So genX ers, whose biggest worry has been worrying about running out of Sunny D, are now all high & mighty? GenX's major contribution to the world is what, 3D computer graphics, or X Games, I can't decide which.

And don't forget that a steady diet of hip hop, crystal meth and video games has blessed genXers with those teensy, tiny attention spans that make any real learning impossible.

Don't worry, I have a more scathing review of my own generation.

Examples:
Gen X expects everything on a silver platter, and will accept nothing less. One of my college roommates (30 years old) still lives at home with mom in the same bedroom he's had since he was 7. Why? He graduated with a bachelor's in graphic design, and will accept nothing less than a job as head of design at some large Madison Avenue firm. As a consequence, he has a degree he has never used (he has been a plumber, a teacher's aid, a drywall installer...) while he holds out for the perfect job. If the Baby Boomers invented PC, my generation thinks of it as a religion. No one can say anything bad about anyone--unless they are a white male. Speaking of religion, my generation has fully bought into The Church of Man-Made Global Warming. Never mind that the arguments for it center on "consensus of scientists" rather than actual science. Too many believe that something has to be done, no matter the cost or the probable effect. My generation expects to always win. We do not cope well with losing. This stems from every kid getting a participation trophy at every single little league game. My generation is codependent on the baby boomers. Most of us can't go more than a few hours without texting, IMing, calling, e-mailing or physically seeing our parents. Forget making decisions on our own. Figuring out what milk to buy at the grocery store can take a dozen text messages to mom. And if their's a problem, be it an unreasonable landlord or a tough college professor, we won't hesitate to sic our parents on the problem and not deal with it ourselves.

This thread is a babble of drivel. Nothing but unsupported stereotypes and generalizations. What a waste of pixels.

Yea but usually stereotypes are based on truth...they are sweeping generalizations, but there is always some truth to them.

It has been labeled "Attention Junkies". How can so many people fear silence and introspection? And why?

They fear the unknown. Constantly being shuttled from little league to karate to private violin lessons, the kids never learned how to cope in an "undirected" environment. Now they are adults and still wait for mom and dad to give them direction.

Is this so? Are they really that more connected to their folks than the previous generation? I'm not close to anybody of that age, so I don't really know.

Before the Boomers became parents, had anyone ever heard of "PlayDates"?

Yes. I see college kids calling their parents between classes. (I used to call once a month, for comparison.) I have coworkers who get 10+ calls a day from each kid.

They think I'm not having "fun" if I'm not giggling like a schoolgirl talking about my friends, asking about my friends, trading gossip about friends, where are my other friends, do my friends miss me (they are all independent guys in their late 30's and have kids, etc- hell no they don't) I should miss my friends, I should always try to do things with my friends, bla bla bla. I want to add to legion's post if it isn't Mom and Dad, it's "friends". Got to ask 20 friends and go with the popular consensus and be doubly sure EVERYBODY has a part in it. My 11th grage English teacher explained it (Her friends) as a "Mule Commitee" - can't reproduce on it's own. Not a lot of people I know around here are not really like this, but the ones that are really stick out. It's irritating as hell just getting something done, or 20 unsolicited opinions on why my personal choice in ANYTHING should be reconsidered. Even ordering dinner is a PITA when this happens. rjp EDIT: I'm a 37 Y/O male who didn't go to college but worked instead if that makes everything clear.

We were born, born in the fifties
Born, born in the fifties Born, born in the fifties Born, born in the fifties My mother cried When president Kennedy died She said it was the communists But I knew better Would they drop the bomb on us While we made love on the beach We were the class they couldn't teach 'Cause we knew better We were born, born in the fifties Born, born in the fifties Born, born in the fifties Born, born in the fifties They screamed When the Beatles sang And they laughed when the King fell down the stairs Oh they should've known better Oh we hated our Aunts Then we messed in our pants Then we lost our faith and prayed to the TV Oh we should've known better We were born, born in the fifties Born, born in the fifties Born, born in the fifties Born, born in the fifties We freeze like statues on the pages of history Living was never like this when we took all those G.C.E.'s Oh, you opened the door for us And then you turned to dust You don't understand us So don't reprimand us We're taking the future We don't need no teacher Born, born in the fifties Born, born in the fifties Born, born in the fifties Born, born in the fifties Born, born in the fifties Born, born in the fifties |
