AZ Drivers: Are those license plate covers for photo radar legal?

My wife may have gotten a photo radar ticket (has not come in the mail yet). Well, we also got an add in the mail for those semi clear covers that go over the plate to distort the face or the numbers from being clearly read. Are these legal in Phoenix and/or Arizona. I've seen them on cars here but did not think they were legal.

Subscribing. BTW, does AZ require front license plates and, if so, do they actually enforce it?

I would suspect that any attempt to beat the system would be deemed illegal.

Mythbusters tested both the covers and the spay can stuff both and found that neither worked.

Looks like they are legal in AZ. http://www.scottsdaleaz.gov/photoradar/faq.asp

I downloaded a POI file for my GPS and it gives me an approaching warning when nearing red light cameras and photo radar.

I read that as they ARE illegal:

Quoted from their site:

Are license plate sprays and covers that are advertised and sold to prevent photography of plates by photo detection cameras prohibited by law?

Arizona law (ARS 28-2354) requires that, " A person shall maintain each license plate so it is clearly legible." The sprays and covers themselves are not illegal. The act of illegible display of the plate is.

I use 'em on my M.B. and even though MythBusters tested them, I suspect they're still of some potential value. If the glare from a camera "flash" hits the lexan cover just right, it'll give you an advantage and just might prevent you from getting busted.

Not to mention they look better than just a metal plate hanging out there. It looks a lot more "finished" to have 'em covered.

Yes, it's technically illegal, but I have yet to be given any guff about it.

I believe the "clearly legible" relates to the human eye. Not sure, but the law was probably written with the on street patrolman as the ticket issuer, not a camera trying to "capture" your license plate.

I think the intent of the law as written is for the patrolman, not a camera.

The covers and sprays do not make the plate illegible to the human eye in any way.

I've thought a photographer's slave flash, mounted by the plate, and triggered to fire when it detects the photo radar's own flash, could work. But I'm not sure the photo radar machines use a flash all the time, e.g. in daytime.

Have used them for years and no hassles and have been stopped for other things and the cop did not say a word.

No front plate is required at this time.
