ok, if you are getting that error it sounds like you are missing the file, or it's not in the correct location.

can you launch the command prompt by going to
Start > Programs > Accessories >

If you still get an error then do a file search for cmd.exe and see if it finds it.

Look for "Command Prompt" and select it.

It's a sign!

But really, we're trying to help. It's not always easy to diagnose these issues.

Did you leave it up and running, connected to the internet while you were out?

Possible software updates were installed that could be causing this, or virus.
Do you have Anti Virus software running?

Did you do a file search for cmd.exe?
Short of manually restoring files that don't appear to be there, maybe running system restore would be the quickest fix.

I'll say it now before someone else jumps in "a mac wouldn't have this problem"

I have nothing against mac's, but microsoft = employment for me

I agree most MS products have there share of "issues", if it's getting slower it might be sypware/virus related, we could try a hundred different things but may still end up with the same issue.
If I was working on this for someone I would try the system restore, it is kind of a shotgun approach but you'll consume more time troubleshooting this issue (others may exist as well).

System Restore:
Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Check "restore my computer to an earlier time"
At the calendar window the restore dates will be in bold text
Click on the restore date/time when you know everything was working
Click "Next"
Confirm your selection by clicking "Next" again

Your pc will start to restore then reboot automatically, after the reboot it will tell you if it was successful or not. If the restore date/time didn't work you can always go back and select another restore point.

Good luck with it, your in good hands with Dave if he's still online.
I just finished wrapping presents and it's after 1:30 AM EST I'm going into sleep mode.

If problems are still there tomorrow (Sunday) let us know.

Night

Go into a cmd window as above and type in NSLOOKUP, then enter Pelicanparts.com and an address will be returned (for me it's 66.236.61.165) and note it, then type in google.com (64.233.187.99 is the first address returned for me) and note it. Now open up a browser window and try both of these "native addresses" (instead of google.com) and let us know what happens. You don't appear to have a Windows issue, but some sort of DNS or IP routing issue from my perspective or else Wayne has "taken over the entire Internet" .

From my perspective, if he can access Pelican with no problems, then his "system" is healthy, and I personally would not amputate an arm due to a hangnail. I highly recommend eliminating potential DNS or IP routing issues (which are not unique to Windows, and can occur on all operating systems, including Macs) before breaking out the BFH unless you just like to "whack" things .

Guys , just got up ,turned it on and is working fine. only thing I did was run defrag when i went to bed..it was down to 66% (not defragmented) which is one of the lower numbers I have seen. my auto fix utilities run overnight but none show any problem.
I never bookmarked anything, did not use restore.
I tend to agree with Kevin.if i could get into pelican then the system must be ok. I don't like taking drastic measures untill it is a last resort.
Virus scans overnight and found nothing.I ran and do run Adaware every morning.
So i will see how the day goes. I don't want to start the day getting frustrated trying to figure what it may have been. I did nothing yesterday on the PC that I don't do everyday so it makes me think of an old car problem I had 25 years ago. when I went into a shop and told the owner of the problem , he said ,"has it happened since" and I said no . so he said "don't worry about it then" So for now that's what I'll do here.
To everyone who took the time, at this very time restricted time of year to help me out I truely appreciate it . You are all Gentleman, Thankyou .

His browsing problems very well could be DNS not able to resolve to IP, but from his earlier posts he can't access his command prompt to repair DNS, he gets "cannot find file (or one of it's components) make sure the path and file name are correct" error message when trying to run cmd, ipconfig, etc. Command prompt is not listed in his programs list, I never heard if he found anything doing a file search for cmd.exe, so I am assuming that the file is missing or misplaced. A DNS problem would not cause this.

A windows system restore is not that drastic, probably the best utility MS has included with the o/s, I'm sure you know that you can spend hours/days fixing this issue but others may be present as well. Sure you can replace individual files from the CD or i386 directory but who's to say that is his only problem.

Of course another way to flush your DNS cache would be to do a "repair" on your network connection.

EDIT: I was typing when you responded, glad to hear it's working.

Merry Xmas everyone!

Yup. Call your internet provider. Tell them you can connect to IP addresses but regular addresses are not being resolved. To verify try:

http://64.233.167.147/

If this goes to google, your DNS isn't working.

Hi Chris.
I never bookmarked anything. when I hit that URL it does go to google instantly.what should happen? my desktop is full of shortcuts I put on there and I hit those to go to the respected sites. been working for years that way.

Well i see above that you're working so it's a moot point I guess...

But here's the deal.

DNS is what takes a typed address such as http://www.google.com and translates it into an IP address (the physical address of the server). You computer will often cache these translations locally.

So if your DNS server went down at your internet providers location, and address you typed in wouldn't get resolved and would error out like you saw. However those addresses which were cached locally would still work because your computer retained the IP.

So they probably fixed their DNS server overnight. If it happes again, try that link I gave you. If you still error out, your connection is down. If it goes to google, your DNS server is down.

Ok I understand what you are saying Chris. That could be a possiblity because my provider has had issues over the past few weeks. Pelican is the site I visit more than any other so perhaps it was saved. last night on dialup everything worked fine so I tended to think my system was ok but because it would connect to pelican when on wireless obviously part of the wireless service had to be working and that was the confusing part.

Glad it's resolved! Hindsight being 20/20, obviously your "problem" was not with your pc, but with your ISP, DNS server, or potentially an IP routing issue. I just approach things logically, knowing how things "should" work, and follow the trail to whereever it leads, without getting sidetracked on non-related issues that only seem to "compound" the problem for many. Happy surfing!!!
