"we're going to have kind of a nation-building corps from America? Absolutely not"

From http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/election/2000debates/2ndebate2.html
"I mean, we're going to have kind of a nation-building corps from America? Absolutely not."

Something close, it's a transcript of Al Gore's speech "Iraq and the War On Terrorism" where corps was used instead of core. Note: this website says in versus from after corps. From http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/library/news/iraq/2002/iraq-020923-gore01.htm

"If we end the war in Iraq, the way we ended the war in Afghanistan, we could easily be worse off than we are today. When Secretary Rumsfield was asked recently about what our responsibility for restabilizing Iraq would be in an aftermath of an invasion, he said, "that's for the Iraqis to come together and decide."

During one of the campaign debates in 2000 when then Governor Bush was asked if America should engage in any sort of "nation building" in the aftermath of a war in which we have involved our troops, he stated gave the purist expression of what is now a Bush doctrine: "I don't think so. I think what we need to do is convince people who live in the lands they live in to build the nations. Maybe I'm missing something here. We're going to have a kind of nation building corps in America? Absolutely not."

The events of the last 85 years provide ample evidence that our approach to winning the peace that follows war is almost as important as winning the war itself. The absence of enlightened nation building after World War I led directly to the conditions which made Germany vulnerable to fascism and the rise to Adolph Hitler and made all of Europe vulnerable to his evil designs. By contrast the enlightened vision embodied in the Marshall plan, NATO, and the other nation building efforts in the aftermath of World War II led directly to the conditions that fostered prosperity and peace for most the years since this city gave birth to the United Nations. "

Now, should that not indicate to you that Gov. Bush said "korz" since it IS listed in 3 other news websites as "Maybe I'm missing something here. I mean, we're going to have kind of a nation building corps from America? Absolutely not."

One more thing, can we please move past this so I may be entertained by political banter and vitriol!
The place where the debate originated was the Commisssion for Presidential Debates. Their website is http://www.debates.org/pages/trans2000b.html
That is where it is listed as I quoted it. What befuddles you about that.

I fail to see the relevance of listing what CNN or CBS or similar 'news professionals" may have translated. As you should know, "news" is often as they perceive to report it. If they corrected the spelling...good for them. But that will never change the way it is is listed in the transcript by the organization that conducted the debate.

And yes, you can move past it at any time of your choosing. Or does your computer automatically turn on, click on this website, sign in with your password, and go to this thread? Seems that there might be an inestimatable number of options you might have if you really want to "move past" it.

That was my point.
What dimension are you from where that would make any sense at all? That would be like saying you served in the Marine Core instead of Marine Corps...The singular version of "corps" is spelled "corps" and is pronounced the same as "core"... Since "corps" makes sense in the sentence and "core" does not...why on earth would you assume "core" is correct just because you found it misspelled in one place...even though it was correctly spelled as "corps" in most other transcripts...including the one by the interviewer/moderator?

Then you tell me why the Commission on Presidential Debates, who conducted the 2000 debate where Bush made the statement, would still have it listed that way on their website and in the transcript?

Because both words are pronounced exactly the same...like "or" and "ore." LIke "right" and "write" or "there" and "their" or "two" and "too." The person doing the transcription for CDC either didn't realize what the correct word was by the usage or simply was not listening critically. Pretty much everyone else got it right. I just listened to the tape of the debate and the word is pronounced perfectly.

I have never listened to the tape. Does he say "kor" or "korz" as you hear it?

BTW, "perfectly" is not a word that you often hear when describing Mr. Bush's grammatical or speaking skills. Gosh, "nuclear" still has him confused.

However, you could be right and perhaps Gov. Bush was not as linguistically challenged back in 2000.

The President pronounces the word "corps" as the singular \ˈkȯr\ which is correct since the rest of the sentence is clearly singular ("a kind of nation building corps in America?").

The plural version of "corps" and "core" (spelled "corps" and "cores") are pronounced as \ˈkȯrz\

Nucular? Nuclear? Unclear (to George)?

I can't help but think that his refusal to say nuclear as opposed to nucular is simply another example of his pugnacious stubbornness.

Well, actually he was "the Gov." back when he said that.

Yeah, he's cute in that way. Probably why his admin has accomplished so much.

Yes, but since he is the President now, that is how it is appropriate to refer to him. Even when you are discussing things that happened previously.

President Bush did not say it...Gov. Bush did.

Yep, I just checked with Wayne and no....you really don't have to look at posts if you don't want to.

Or does your computer automatically turn on, click on this website, sign in with your password, and go to this thread? Seems that there might be an inestimatable number of options you might have if you really want to call it off.

However, as they say in the NFL replays....after further review....we may consider it!

There's no way (accessible from the internet) to give them feedback on (possibly) mis characterized, incorrect, or wrongly attributed transcripts so they may be checked and edited (if need be). How would they know it's wrong if there's no way to tell them?

Nonetheless, I enjoy reading peoples opinions, thoughts, and feelings, no matter how off or convoluted they may be, on many subject matters. It gives me insight into how other people perceive the world around them. That intrigues me, gives me new perspectives to explore, and generally entertains me. There's almost always someone with some odd joke or story that gets slipped in that's good for a laugh too. That's why I turn my computer on, and come to this site.
