I have 2 brothers-in-law. One lives here in SoCal and the other in Atlanta. The SoCal bro is cool, but is computer illiterate. The Atlanta, GA bro is computer literate, but totally clueless.
So the GA bro helps the LA Bro spec out a Dell. GA bro insists on doing this! I tell him a few things he needs to add, and send him to the coupon site (www.edealinfo.com). Sends it to me, since I am teh ub3r g33k. I get the thing, open it up, and its a piece of crap. C2D 1.6 and 1 GB RAM. No internal card reader, like I asked, no 2 GHz or better like I asked, no 2 GB RAM like I asked. Seriously, for another $100, he could have had a 2 GHz C2D and 2 GB of RAM. I don't friggen get it. My SoCal Bro has the cash, he works all the time. No wife, no kids, lives like a caveman. I just don't get it. Now they expect me to move all my LA Bro's junk from his old PC to the new one with no firewire (included on the internal card reader). I want to throw the thing through the damn window. ![]() /Rant off //thanks for listening.

Yes, but can you return in-laws? I hear Costco has a decent return policy, maybe they'll take 'em back. OH, and to top it all off, I have had my LA bro's Jeep Wrangler in my driveway for the last year. He bought one of the new 4 door Wranglers and didn't know what to do with the old one, so its sitting here. Anyone want to buy a lifted 94 Jeep Wrangler, 2.5l ?

I keep away from bride's family.. usually.
There's a constant supply of family "situations" happening. "I don't want to know anything." 50 of them were here for x-mas in my 900sq' little house. you have more patience than me.. good luck.

My mother is very much like this. Complete and utter techno-tard.
She has two laptops. She's killed one twice now. WAY too many programs instaleld on them. They all do the same thing - photo editing. Programs fighting for DLL control with other programs. Shortcuts to shortcuts, links to links. Photos saved over every square bit of HDD space, in folders she doesn't know exist. "I pushed a button and something happend" she'll say. "What button?" I'll ask. " I don't know" she'll respond. She'll call all day. "Something happened" She once called, saying her laptop wasn't charging. Turned out, she had the plug in the wrong spot. I don't know how you manage that one... My dad bought her a USB Hard drive for Christmas. Total plug and play. She did that OK...but then she screwed it up. No concept of "drag and drop" to put stuff on the hard drive. No concept of where she's saving stuff. She still doesn't realize that to get to a specific website (mine, for example) you just type the address in the address bar. You don't Google it and searching through a thousand sites till you find the one you're looking for. I seriously want her to return them both with the excuse that she's too stupid to own a computer. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

No worries. $100 is nothing compared to opening your yap and starting a scene. If you're indeed the ‘Ub3r G33k’, why is it so important they acknowledge it?

Nor do you want to know my opinion.
Though Ronin pretty much sums it up:

It's like saying "Joe's a ditch digger, he can do it" and giving Joe a tablespoon to dig the hole with after being told "make sure you get the backhoe."

Years ago, my brother and I got Dad his first PC. Windows 98 iirc. He called me up one day and said something to the effect of "I can't read any of the things on the screen." "What did you do?" "I don't know!" He couldn't use the PC for 2 weeks until my brother got out to Dad's house. Somehow, and we're not sure how, he increased the font size for the icons on the desktop to like 300!! All of the text was huge and spilling over onto everything. Too funny.

My youngest brother bought a computer about 10 years ago, a couple of months later I asked how he likes it. he said it was the most expensive deck of cards he'd ever bought
![]() In the early 90's I got a promotion which required the use of a computer. I'd never touched one before, and knew absolutely nothing about one. No problem, we'll teach you they say. Gave me a password, showed me how to log on, etc. About 15 minutes later I called my wife and said "my computers going nuts. What did I do?" She asked what it was donig, i told her "the screen went blank and now there's a bunch of lines swirling across the screen". She said that's the screen saver . I said, "I don't care what it is, how do I make it stop? ![]() That same week I went out and bought my first computer, an HP SX50 with 4 megs of ram, a 2400 baud modem and a 420 meg hard drive, cost $1500 with a printer. Man was that a fast machine! The same day I got it home I took it aparts and freaked out the wife, I told her if I was going to be using one I needed to know what's inside. I didn't. Then I learned DOS, didn't really need that much. Then I learned MS basic, used it a couple of times in Access. I actually bought one of those windows for dummies books ![]() After a couple of weeks I was getting really good at playing DOOM, new almost all the secrets and could almost get through it in the toughest level. Then I discovered Heretic and all went downhill from there. doom II, hexen, blood, redneck ramapage, doom III, final doom, ultimate doom, lots O'hours spent. |
