New CTS-V: AMG killer?

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/08/detroit-2008-2009-cadillac-cts-v-revealed-with-550-hp/

Zero to sixty in four seconds. 6.2L V8 with 555 horsepower and 550+ ft-lbs torque, 6-speed, Brembo 6-piston 15 inch brakes, Recaro seats.
Not your grandfather's Cadillac.

Looks like a formidable competitor to AMG C/E63, BMW M5, or Audi RS4.

I can't wait to drive one!

E

The interior/dash looks like it was designed by Alpine Electronics, is it?

Nice torquey powerplant. I just can't get over the boxy / angular exterior design.

Seems to be a love or hate type of car.

new m3 or c63 amg for me. If I were to spend that kinda money on a car, it sure as hell won't be a caddy.

I agree. The AMG C63 and Lexus IS-F seem to be as well.

Agreed. I used to hate the look of these but now I really like them- never thought I'd say that. The latest generation Audis just look like rolling turds to me...

I like the dash on the CTS, and while the seats are cool you can tell from the third pic that the bolstering looks like it will last all of about 6 weeks and then start to pucker and ripple...they just don't look well put together in that respect.

"V-Series will offer Recaro performance driving seats.... These new, 14-way adjustable performance seats include pneumatic bolster controls in the seat cushion and backrest."

Recaro is producing these seats for Cadillac, as they do for Audi and Porsche, etc. You'd think they would hold up as well as any aggressively bolstered sport seat.

And doesn't there appear to be a targeting reticle on the satnav?

I just dont get the styling objectives. Those vertical head and taillights make the car look tall, not low. The body is huge in comparison to the greenhouse, once again giving it a stodgy look and the front spoiler looks like an add on.

It seems to go against basic design philosophy of using horizontal lines to make a car look low and sleek.

Might come with impressive credentials, but not sure it's something I'd want to actually own (and have paid big bucks for) 5 years down the line, as opposed to the Benx/BMW/Audi, which are keepers.

The new CTS was Motor Trend's Car of The Year for 2007. So something has to be said for that.

AMG killer? Sure, why not? Cadillac is on a strong roll these days.

I'd be interested to know what the MSRP will be.

I understand what you are saying, and I am not necessarily a fan of the CTS's styling, but I have to give Cadillac credit for using original, unique designs rather than following the pack.

As for the engineering, yeah, I'd want one. GM has recently re-learned how to shoot for the moon instead of just "adequate". There is a good article in Automobile this month how the head of GM's Corvette racing program (an amateur racer and engineer himself) was allowed pretty wide latitude with the racing Z06.

I bet the CTS-V is $60,000.
Heck, the new ZR1 Corvette is $100,000.
As good as GM is, $100K is getting kinda' close to Porsche GT-3 territory.

I have to say I do like the design of the Caddy Roadster. The angular approach seems to work better. It kinda looks like the next iteration of the Mercedes SL R129.

If you're refering to John Heinricy, he's from my tiny home town of in eastern South Dakota!! I've never met him but have heard nearly everyone say he's a good guy...for what that's worth.
