idiots in retail
I went to Frys today and tried to buy a $60 stick of RAM with a $100 bill. The problem, the bill was from 1934. The cashier called over some other chick, who then called some higher ranked chick who eventually called someone like a store manager. It took at least 10 minutes for them to go through the string of people. I kept thinking, "they'll use one of those pens on the bill and it'll be fine." Nope, eventually the manager came to me and said "We believe this is not a real bill. Do you have alternate form of payment?" He said that as he handed the bill back to me. I don't remember when the guy said it, but he at some point said that his "trained loss prevention department" had checked the bill. What's sad is that their "trained loss prevention department" person tore the bill looking for the embedded strip. I'm only 36, and I know that that strip wasn't added that long ago (I looked it was 1990). Uh huh, trained loss prevention dept that doesn't know dick about money. I understand where they are coming from, and I don't really mind that they didn't take the bill. But, to tell me that "we don't believe is a real $100," and then hand the thing back to me and let me leave tells me that they just have no idea and didn't want to chance it. If they really believed that it was counterfeit, they'd have held the bill and called the cops. Why couldn't they just say something like, "because of it's age, we aren't sure of it's authenticity and would rather not take the bill."
Whatever. I guess I'll get a bank to make change and go back with smaller bills. Maybe I'll buy a $100 ones or something. Let them count that. Just had to rant someplace. This reminds me of the thread where the McDonalds wouldn't take a $2 bill from someone here once because they didn't believe it was real, including the manager. Pretty darn funny.

Is it a silver or gold certificate? If so, I'll buy it off you for face value.

A $100 bill from 1934 is worth more than $100. At least it was before they tore it

![]() I always look at the dates on my money, and been saving Bicentennial quarters since they came out. I find one, I put it in the ash tray out of my old 944 (yes, I kept the ashtray after the car got totalled about 12 years ago) and same thing with old pennies ![]()

We need more facts.
A quick google seach reveals this web page: http://www.uspapermoney.com/worth.html which says: " Did you know that a 1966 $100 bill is typically worth FAR more than a 1934 $100 bill? " And this Web Page (http://www.rrcoins.net/Q&A.htm) which says: "I have a 1934 D Series $100 FRN and am curious as to its value. I see you have an H series posted for sale but can not read the sale price. If you could respond I would greatly appreciate it. I might be interested in selling this bill and would also like to know the best way to go about selling currency. Thank you. I suspect that you have a small monitor and will need to move or shift your screen to the right in order to see my prices. (There's a bar at the bottom or your window.) Your note is worth $105 in very good condition and $125 in crisp uncirculated condition."

Before anyone gets too excited, it was most likely not worth much more than face value.
Here is a link to a completed auction on eBay for a 1934 $100 Fed. Reserve Note: Having said that, there could be other factors that would make it worth more like if it was in uncirculated condition, was a "star" note, unique serial number or from a small printing run etc. Do you have any more ![]()

There has been a phrase that has served me well when dealing with low paid people of any stripe and you get crap service, "When you pay peanuts, you get monkeys". (college kids working their way through not withstanding).

I went to Frys today and tried to buy a $60 stick of RAM with a bag of doubloons. The problem, the doubloons were from 1594. The cashier called over some other chick, who then called some higher ranked chick who eventually called someone like a store manager. It took at least 10 minutes for them to go through the string of people. I kept thinking, "they'll use a Rockwell hardness test to test the gold content, and it'll be fine." Nope, eventually the manager came to me and said "We believe this is not real money. Do you have alternate form of payment?" He said that as he handed the doubloons back to me. I don't remember when the guy said it, but he at some point said that his "trained loss prevention department" had checked the doubloons. What's sad is that their "trained loss prevention department" marked one of the dubloons with his pocket knife. Uh huh, trained loss prevention dept that doesn't know dick about money. I understand where they are coming from, and I don't really mind that they didn't take the dubloons. But, to tell me that "we don't believe is a real money," and then hand the thing back to me and let me leave tells me that they just have no idea and didn't want to chance it. If they really believed that it fake, they'd have held the doubloons and called the cops. Why couldn't they just say something like, "because of it's age, we aren't sure of it's authenticity and would rather not take the doubloons."

Yeah, thanks folks. I guess that shows that several of you aren't as smart as you think you are. I did the some research, $100 from 1934 that's just a plain old bill isn't worth much more than $100 if that.
I've also got 2 $50 bills from 1934. All three are in pretty pristine shape, but then that doesn't really matter much. Yeah, I'm kind of pissed that they tore the bill, but it's still worth $100.

I did some research. Not star notes, nothing interesting about the SN, etc... I don't really think I lost much from the tear.

Wow. $100 in 1934 dollars is probably worth $20,000 in todays economy. What was the price of Model T's back then?

There was a recent story of a guy who was taken to jail because the fast food place called the cops and the cops didn't believe there was such a thing as a $ 2 bill. Of course, the bill was legit, but he spent time in jail for it anyway.

That's gotta be an urban legend. That's insane. I'd be suing someone.

I used some new $1 coins at the Miami airport Starbucks. The employee looked at them and asked what they were. I replied "The new Dollar coin." She took them. In hindsight, I think I could have given her monopoly money and lied about them being real and she STILL would have accepted them.

In 1934 $100.00 was a load of cash. You could make that last for several days of quality fun. Today it won't cover two tanks of gas WTF?
