Perception vs. Reality

Scene: Riding bikes with the kids, going off jumps, etc.

Perception: Going very fast, at least as fast as the kids, and catching some sweet air, poppin' some pretty good wheelies, general craziness.

Reality (as caught on video): Old man creeping along, barely fast enough to stay upright, rolling through (not over) jumps, catching no discernible air and occasionally yanking (with much effort) the front wheel a few inches off the ground. General impression - wow, just wow.

Concern: No concern with the riding aspect: K9 or BVD I am not. My concern is where else in my life this vast, vast, vast gulf between perception and reality may exist. The possibilities are limitless but my ability to discern is, well, you know, not so good.

video is a harsh mistress...

As for the concern, best to just continue in ignorance. Life is too short for reality.

When are we going hiking?

I've sat in stunned disbelief watching video of myself at the driving range.

Picklerelish,

I don't "hike" (reality), I run (perception).

How old are you??? How old are your kids??? I know that I can't jump as high or far as I use to and I will admit, the last time I hit a jump for big air (at the track, I was squirly, and only found out later that no one jumped that set of doubles, not even the 17 year olds, of course the following week, I pulled a muscle in my back & found out that my blood pressure was through the roof, (currently back up there) and had to take some time off of everything. Just have fun, that is what it is all about.

I think it's partly because it looks like some old guy trying to relive his youth - hilarity usually ensues from that.

And the fact that it appears he went out and set up a remote video cam to record his radness.

And the sound, the "sack of potatos fall, and that split second of stunned motionlessness on the ground. Funny.

The miniscus in the knees is the gap between perception and reality. Once the miniscus is gone, perception and reality meet.

Dancing

Last summer I attended a wedding. Wife and I were out on the floor for several fast songs. I thought I was my young self again, pop-lockin' and doing the cabbage patch. When they showed the wedding video this Christmas at the family gathering, I thought I was going to vomit I was so ashamed.

See, I go in *knowing* I'm going to look retarded and just have fun with it. People are either horrified or "get it". Either way, I'm having fun.

I thought I had a basically full head 'o hair. That's what I see looking from the front.

Then a stylist handed me a mirror so I could see the back. All I could see was a denuded scalp staring at me with a few sprigs sprouting.

I have to say that at 41, I can still ride motocross at a respectable pace on a motocross track..... but only for about a lap! Same basic idea for skiing moguls... one or two good runs at the beginning of the first day..... then my legs are gone!

Stick with the "old as you feel" approach and get rid of the vid cam.

Good for you evil!!

Sure, a daily doses of auto-fluffing keeps the doc away.
