"I know my fair share of folks who beleive they should be "entitled" to certian things because of the injustices of the past or the potential injustices they may face in the future. I have no need for those types of folk.

I just don't want to give anyone a chance to form an excuse for why they can't perform a job or get ahead in this world. From what I have seen, thsi country is ripe for anyone to get ahead provided they are given a fair shake and are willing to work for it. You don't even have to be smart."

Fair enough provided you forfeit all the advantages and disadvantages you accrued being born into the family and circumstances of your birth. These things accrue or are dissipated over many generations. Note that earning a decent living or having political influence (membership in skilled unions, the professions, etc. and being able to vote) was denied to many members of our society within living memory. You cannot rationalize that the children or grandchildren of these people start out at the same point in life as any other child. Everyone wants things to be fair as long as they can decide in time when things become fair. Most do not think on these things.

Something I wrote on another thread when I saw that this one was going to be closed...

Nostatic removing a post that I didn't have a chance to read on the MLK thread made me think of this article:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080121/ap_on_re_us/mlk_legacy

Quote:
NEW YORK - Nearly 40 years after the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., some say his legacy is being frozen in a moment in time that ignores the full complexity of the man and his message.
...
King was working on anti-poverty and anti-war issues at the time of his death. He had spoken out against the Vietnam War and was in Memphis when he was killed in April 1968 in support of striking sanitation workers.
...
By taking on issues outside segregation, he had lost the support of many newspapers and magazines, and his relationship with the White House had suffered, said Harvard Sitkoff, a professor of history at the University of New Hampshire who has written a recently published book on King.

"He was considered by many to be a pariah," Sitkoff said.
King has been frozen in 1963. The next five years of his life are largely ignored. In fact, to bring them up almost universally brings condemnation.

In the U.S., we don't like our heroes with flaws.

There is no point in guilt ,white or otherwise. I'm Heinz 57 (mostly the "wretched refuse or white trash" of Europe) but I have a few genes that got here by crossing the Bering Strait. I know there is no going back but there is still a chance for decency and rationality in the future.

In all fairness, we need an Illegal Mexican day. On this day we can celebrate the accomplishments of all the illegal Mexicans who perform all the work that Americans would rather lay on their asses & get paid by the govt, than do. We even have an MC ready to go.

I think we need a ban Mule day. I'm sick of his Stormfront views, but I'm sure he "calls 'em how I see 'em"

But, I don't think being racist/bigot qualifies.

he's not a racist bigot. He just has a "different opinion."

I think it is more Grand Dragon than Stormfront, but we agree to disagree...

btw, just to clarify I'm talking about this cute music box. Isn't it adorable? The 14" Grand Dragon Music Box.

About the reparations thing: The wishes of anyone who wants to be paid for alleged unlawful/illegal grievances to their ancestors should be respected. However, it should work both ways.

So before they are paid, there should be a complete and thorough examination of all of the acts of all of their ancestors and they should be held accountable for those acts.

Then, when they are released from prison...they should promptly be paid their reparations.

Being judged by the quality of one's character.

To me, that is what it is all about.

A tort exists when one party wrongs another party. As neither the wronged party nor the party alleged to have committed the tort are alive, there is no one who would have legal standing in such a case.

But you all already knew that.
