Scent-free policy

So we have a scent-free policy at work, which is a load of BS because it's impossible to be scent free. In effect, we're asked to be consciencious, and if someone is using or wearing products that others react to, theyre asked (usually nicely) to cease and desist. I actually agree with the general idea, because there is always some twit who douses themself is cheap perfume so they smell like a $2 WalMart candle. Drives me bonkers.

But I got bit by the beast today... 20 minutes ago, in fact. My wife packs me a nice lunch every day (I know, spoiled). Today it's spaghetti with pesto. Nice roll and real butter. Yum.

One of my coworkers walks by, stops, and says "Garlic? Who's having garlic?!"

"I think this pesto has some garlic in it," I reply.

"I'm pretty sure that's against the scent-free policy... I'm allergic."

"You're allergic to the smell?! Or are you allergic if you eat it?" I ask

"I'm allergic to many strong smelling foods. Doesn't matter anyway, we have a scent free policy"

"Oh right, and what are you having for lunch, Donna?"

"McDonalds, why?"

"Well I can't stand the smell of crappy food, so where does that leave us?"

She just walked away, but I'm sure she's going to complain to occupational health... she's that type.

Honest to ***k, the pesto didn't have enough garlic to really even taste it, so it's not like I was chewing on a clove or something. This is about a weenie not wanting to be exposed to things they don't like.

Is it even possible to be allergic to the smell of garlic?

File a formal complaint about the smell emanating from her cratch. Be descriptive. And take the initiative before she files her complaint. That way it'll make her complaint look like simple retaliation.

Political Correctness once again raises its ugly head. A society of whiners and complainers, all seeking to dominate others and control what they wear, what hey aay and now how they smell. Personally, I love the variety of scents in the world. It confirms the fact that I am still alive.

Yes. Definitely people are allergic to smells.

What you are 'smelling' are actually v. small aerosols (droplets) floating in the air.

For instance, I'm allergic to farts.

I don't doubt that peopel have reactions to smells. I get headaches from strong perfumes & candles.
I just wonder if people who are allergic to garlic, are actually allergic to the smell.

What about garlic farts? I'll have some in a couple hours. Any guesses where I'm going with them?

After you digest some of that pesto, retain some intestinal gas for a nice little surprise later.

Someone just bought a healthy slice of stinky cheese stashed in a discreet place in their desk.

I'd be careful there. I've heard about these type of creatures that are allergic to garlic. If you don't hammer a stake through her heart this afternoon I don't think you'll be posting tomorrow...

My wife is an elementary school teacher and they've got some strict policies in place regarding allergies. Absolutely no peanuts in the school, because apparently for some kids who are very sensitive even the scent can trigger an allergic reaction. But garlic? C'mon. I call BS.

BTW, the stench of McDonalds is far worse than anything. I've noticed a striking similarity between the smell of a 1-hour old McD's hamburger and 2-day BO. yuck.

When I was a kid I don't recall anyone ever having any allergies against foods or smells. In fact, I'm pretty sure I never saw anyone get sick on an airplane because they ate a bag of peanuts. I don't know anyone who didn't get stung by a bee or wasp or scorpion on the playground at one time or another and somehow we all made it to adulthood. When did all these new allergies start? There are certain foods that make me almost nauseous to smell or eat, but they are not allergies. I got so drunk on SoCo once in college that I get nauseous to this day when I smell it and haven't touched it since. But it ain't an allergy. What's with these people?
