Today energy. Tomorrow.......

Recent threads here have made me think about the subject. Given the current world situation and the burgening population, I feel that within the next few decades the new shortage will be food. What do the rest of you think?

Wouldn't surprise me.

Humans feel the need to overpopulate the world needlessly. It will only end by means of plague, natural disaster, self-annhiliation or similar catastrophic end. Famine might qualify.

Nope. Cloned food will prevent that. Besides which, aren't some farmers in the U.S. paid not to harvest their crops? This can easily be reversed.

People will be killing each other over water rights before the food issue comes up. But otherwise, yes, you are correct in your assumption.

Isn't that similar to a good guess?

Geeze, MG, do you need to quickly find something ELSE to scare yourself with? Is all this cold weather having you loose faith in the church of Gore?

Anyway, Food and fresh water all come with energy. (so the problem is still "energy")

Why are we not pulling (more) oil off the coast of Cali? ...Alaska? --Paying the ME $90/barrel can not be good for the future.

I had a conversation with my then Congressman George Brown back in the day. Overpopulation is truly the cause of many of mans woes. I said food would be the problem, Ole George thought new farming technology would be able to solve that problem. However it is FRESH WATER that is going to be the problem.

For all of mans cleverness Mother Nature is one step ahead with little things like HIV. Who knows what the next plague will be, thats just waiting in some rain forest to be let loose. Like a Hemorrhagic Fever that is transmitted by air. Or a simple little flu virus that wipes out 60M people or so.

Thats one reason why I just don't buy that man is the leading cause of Global Warming. It is arrogant to think that man is in control of the planet. However man does have a nasty habit of sh~ting where he eats. Bon Apatite

We won't need to worry about food decades away, we'll be gone.

Within 10 years there will be synthetic bacteria in the atmosphere scrubbing it of CO2 as the last of 3 failed attempts at reversing global warming.

2 years after the program's introduction a small asteroid from outside our solar system will hit the Earth. On entry, the bacteria will absorb a small amount of organic material from the asteroid, flash mutate, and in a matter of days eat all of our oxygen.

Food and potable water. It is all in Ehrlich's book, "Population Bomb." Grant Hardin had one too, but I can't recall the title. It is not still energy. The Romans moved their water around just fine without burning much gas.

"Soylent Green is People!", as Chuck said. Be no shortage of them for too long.

Garrett Hardin wrote a book called "Lifeboat Ethics". He predicted that world wide famine would have happened by now.

You know Bob, I also have thought about that. I cannot see why we do not use that economic weapon right now. The one thing that we can probably do better than any other nation (excepting war and weapons) is produce huge quantities of food.

Yet, instead of exploiting this advantage, the dip*****s in Washington pay our farmers to NOT produce!

It's insanity. I was playing "go-fer" for my personal War Dept. here at home the other day and per her instructions got to looking at the produce at Sam's Club. Sure enough...quite a bit of the fruit and produce was being imported.

Figure that one out.
