This is why I don't have a "favorite" team anymore. Now I can ENJOY watching a game every now and then ;) I dislike both teams and QBs. Brady for lacking moral fiber, Manning for dissing San Diego, NE cause way back when I was a fish fan, and NY for it's *wonderful* fans.

Incredible SB. Wow. What a clutch final 50 seconds by NY. They owed the line of scrimmage and putting Brady on the turf early was the key.

Proof there is a God. Good triumphs over evil. Bellicheat chokes on the big one 2 out of 3 now!

'89 49ers and Joe Montana, STILL the greatest of all time!

Joe Bob 02-03-2008 06:56 PM

Ahem....

Very good game, first SB I've enjoyed in a long time....

Mule, you must not really follow the NFL real close. I do. When the 49ers won the '89 Super bowl they lost about a half dozen games during the '88 season. I saw them lose one of them and they looked terrible.

And even the next season when they won the 1990 Super bowl the 49ers lost at least 2 games during the 1989 regular season.

Or doesn't any of those pesky lil facts count for you?;)

Red Baron 02-03-2008 07:07 PM

Regardless of the 88 record, still one of the best 3 year runs in the history of the sport. And add the 84 season and you have even more to build a case they were the best ever. And unlike the Patriots* the Niners played in a tough Division. In fact they played a Division opponent in the NFC Championship.

1988: The 49ers would get off to a solid 5-2 start, but things looked bleak after a they lost 4 of their next 5 games to fall 2 games out of first with a 6-5 record. Making matter worse was the fact that relationships were being strained between coach Bill Walsh and Joe Montana over the playoff benching in the previous season, and management who felt Walsh was overstepping his bounds. As rumors flew around that Walsh was set to be fired the 49ers won 4 straight and won the NFC West with a 10-6 record. In the Divisional Playoffs at Candlestick the 49ers got revenge by beating the Minnesota Vikings in convincing fashion 34-9. Leading the way to victory was Jerry Rice who caught 3 TD passes, and Roger Craig who sealed the game with a record 80-yard TD run. In the NFC Championship Game the 49ers faced the Bears and wind chills that were 26 degrees below zero at Solider Field in Chicago. However, the cold seemed to affect the Bears more as the 49ers defense shut down the Bears, as the team advanced to their 3rd Super Bowl with a convincing 28-3 win.

Super Bowl XXIII: The 49ers were back in the Super Bowl facing the Cincinnati Bengals in Miami. The game was stalemate late into the 3rd Quarter as both teams could only manage 6 points. However, the Bengals would take a 13-6 lead into the 4th Quarter after Stanford Jennings returned a kick for a TD. The 49ers would bounce back quickly tying the game on a Joe Montana to Jerry Rice TD pass in the 4th. However, the Bengals took a 16-13 lead with a little over 3 minutes left. Making matters worse was that a penalty forced the 49ers to start their last drive on their own 8-yard line. However, Joe was cool under pressure, again methodically driving the 49ers up the field, and deep into Bengals territory. With 39 seconds left Montana coolly hit WR John Taylor in the middle of the endzone to give the 49ers a dramatic 20-16 comeback victory. Jerry Rice would go on to earn Super Bowl MVP. However, the season would be the last for Coach Bill Walsh who retired after winning his 3rd Lombardi Trophy of the decade.

1989: Under new Coach George Seifert the 49ers looked even stronger winning the NFC West easily with a 14-2 record, while winning all 8 games on the road. The season was also the best of Joe Montana's career as he won NFL MVP, and Offensive Player of the Year honors by passing for 3,521 yards and throwing 28 TD passes to just 8 Interceptions. The 49ers continued to roll in the Divisional Playoff easily beating the Minnesota Vikings 41-13 at Candlestick Park. In the NFC Championship Game against the Los Angeles Rams the 49ers fell behind 3-0 after one Quarter, before scoring 3 TDs in the 2nd to take control of the game. The 49ers would not look back winning the game easily 30-3 to advance to their 4th Super Bowl.

Super Bowl XXIV: In New Orleans the 49ers faced the Denver Broncos in a Super Bowl that was more of a coronation then a contest. The 49ers would grab control of the early, and would not be stopped scoring 2 TDs in each Quarter, in a 55-10 blowout win that established the 49ers as one of the greatest teams in NFL history. The game set record for both most points scored, and largest margin of victory as Joe Montana won a record 3rd Super Bowl MVP, while leading the 49ers to a record tying 4th Super Bowl victory.

1990: With one goal in mind the 49ers took control of the NFC West early by winning their first 10 games. The 49ers undefeated hopes ended with a 28-17 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on November 25th at Candlestick Park. The loss would be a minor bump in the road as the 49ers finished with a 14-2 record for the second season in a row, as Joe Montana captured his 2nd straight MVP. The 49ers quest for a threepeat began in earnest with a 28-10 win over the Washington Redskins in the Divisional Playoffs at Candlestick. However, the big game would be the NFC Championship as the 49ers faced the New York Giants. The game was defensive struggle just like their regular season match up, but he Giants managed to stay in the game by hitting Field Goals. The game turned in the 4th Quarter with 49ers leading 13-9 when Joe Montana was injured on a vicious hit form Leonard Marshall that also caused a fumble. The Giants would take advantage adding another FG to get within 1 point. However the 49ers looked to be in good shape running out the clock with a little over 2 minutes left, but suddenly Roger Craig had the ball stripped and the Giants had new life. The Giants would get the ball down the field and with time expiring nailed their 5th FG of the day to stun the 49ers 15-13, ending their dreams of a threepeat

He's right about Montana, but not about the 49ers. The 62 Packers, then the 92 Cowboys, and finally the 85 Bears for my top 3.

Mule 02-03-2008 07:12 PM

Dude you are too stoooopid to argue facts with. Something that requires objective, observational skills like football, is way outside your league. Joe Cool, 4-0, by a mere 75 points. Brady, 3-1 by 9 points. You make the call!

'89 9ers don't make the top 3? Amusing!

Depends on how far you want to go back in the NFL.

From 1961 until 1967 the Packers won 5 NFL titles along with those first two Super Bowls. They had a couple of seasons in there where they lost only one game and none of those Packer teams ever lost 6 games like the 49ers did during their run.

Also, those Packer teams had more players end up in the NFL Hall of Fame
than any other team. By far.

So guess where my vote goes?:D

Mule before you call anyone "stooopid" (are you paying attention nostatic?)
you need to try to remember what you typed. Yes, I do realize it's difficult for some folks.

You specifically mentioned the 1989 49ers you dimwit!:D

Don Plumley 02-03-2008 07:26 PM

What a great game! The only two games I watched this year was this one and the GB/Giants freezer bowl. Wow!

You are much more on target than Mule. That Bear team was awesome and should never have lost that one game to you know who.

But I seem to recall that the '96 Packers were the first and only Super Bowl winner to lead the league in most points scored and least points allowed so they might be up there somewhere.

However, I am a tad prejudiced.;)

I don't put them in there because I think the 92 49ers were a better team.

It's funny to see the votes roll in for the Giants after the fact.

14-2 in the toughest division in football. 3 crushing playoff wins? You would be wrong.

mattdavis11 02-03-2008 08:52 PM

Your case holds some water. In 1989 the Rams went 11-5 and made a wild card game, then went on to SF to lose in the NFC title game. In 1992 the Saints went 12-4 and made a wild card game.

However, the 1992 49ers ended the regular season with the same record as the 89 team, 14-2. They broke all kinds of team/league records that year. It was nearly impossible to stop Young. If someone wasn't open, he was hoofin it. That team was the best team in the NFL that year, by far. However, the outcome was much similar to tonights game, and SF lost to Dallas 30-20.

Just because they didn't win it all doesn't mean they weren't better than previous teams, except if you're the Pats. That's totally different.

Mule, this is what you posted above:

"Proof there is a God. Good triumphs over evil. Bellicheat chokes on the big one 2 out of 3 now!

'89 49ers and Joe Montana, STILL the greatest of all time!"

So why now are you yapping about 14-2 since that 49er team that won the '89 Super Bowl lost at least 6 games?

Did you lose your train of thought again?

Mule 02-03-2008 09:22 PM

Can you read, or just cut & paste?

mattdavis11 02-03-2008 09:25 PM

Seems like years aren't meshing for you. People get confused, I've won many bets this way. The team Mule is referring to is in fact the 1989 49ers. The 88 49ers were 10-6 reg. season and played in the 89 SB squeaking by Cincinnati. The 89 49ers playing in the 90 SB beat the crap out of Denver.

Your train of thought suggests that the 97 packers were the greatest. The 98 packers then would have lost the first superbowl by an NFC team to an AFC team in 13 season. I'll never forget that, effin packers broke the streak.

kstar 02-03-2008 09:29 PM

Looks like some votes for the Giants are still trickling in after the win. Nice pick, guys. :)

Amazing game and that last New York drive is still in my head . . . that was something.

I missed the pick, FWIW. That's why I don't bet games.

Best,

Kurt
