This is the B-17 auxiliary power unit. Basically, this is a small engine that sits in the back of the plane, and provides power via generator to the aircraft systems. This particular APU is probably a two-stroke, since you can see what looks like an air filter feeds the crankcase. If you look closely, you can see that it was manufactured by Homelite, the company that exists today and makes a lot of weed whips.
The Boeing B-29 had a four-stroke APU that was the fore-runner to their gasoline lawnmower engines. I was told that this was built by Briggs & Stratton. ![]() Last edited by Normy; 05-11-2008 at 09:50 PM.. |

![]() Bah! Crap. This airplane was finished too late to actually fly in combat. I worked around the world in the late 1940's, eventually ending up in New Mexico, where it was parked 15 miles away from the explosions of three thermonuclear bombs. After three years of sitting, it was examined and then sold for scrap. It spent some time dropping water and retardent on fires in the Northwest, but eventually a restoration group bought it and now it flies around the country. This thing is lovingly! restored! That cockpit, though old and cramped...makes modern airliners look dirty~ N! |
