It is the crank nose of a '90 Miata which has experienced the Small Nose Crank failure (almost commonplace in the first two years of production). You will note the key way is gouged out wider on the crank. The fix is to use liquid metal to fill in the gouge and to bed the camshaft belt drive pulley, then use a new key and a crankshaft bolt with thread locker.
As I said, I had it back on the road within a week (never worked on a Miata before) and it is more fun than I remembered. Plus, I have shrunk enough in the past ten years (from getting older) that I fit in the darned thing!
