A few newly-found pics from the USGP at Watkins Glen in 1979. The condition of the off-track areas is striking compared to the manicured landscaping at tracks these days. Also, it was sort of a free-for-all during the race where we (and dozens of others) hopped the fence and stood along the guardrails. Never had anyone tell us to move.

I attended the US Grand Prix race in ‘74 or ‘75. A driver went under a guard rail and was decapitated. A friend and I drove up (from VA) in my dad’s VW camper and camped there. Never saw so many drunks in my life! Walking around the course was like an obstacle course of discarded alcohol bottles and cans. They also set a greyhound style bus on fire. Once was enough for me.

That was Francois Cevert, Jackie Stewart's teammate. Apparently he was a real lady killer, to quote Stewart and his involvement with women: "He did so much damage"
Edit - it was Helmut Koinigg that was decapitated in '74. Cevert (pictured below) perished in 1973 at Watkins Glen under similar circumstances.

Silly, but made me chuckle for a moment.

I was there that year, crewing for a Formula Atlantic team. As stated, it was Koenig who was killed that year.
