More cop B.S : Dump paalyzed man from wheelchair

Edit: sorry for the stupid typos...I hate typing on the wife's laptop.

In light on the Baltimore cop vs. skater kid thread, here's one I saw on the news last night. This cop I'd say is even more of abomination tot he Force.

I did hear today that the Baltmore cop was suspended, by the way...

Surveillance Video Shows Deputy Dumping Paralyzed Man From Wheelchair

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. -- Four deputies in West Florida were suspended Wednesday morning for tossing a paralyzed man out of his wheelchair.

Orient Road Jail surveillance footage from Jan. 29 shows veteran deputy Charlette Marshall-Jones, 44, dumping Brian Sterner out of his wheelchair and searching him on the floor after he was brought in on a warrant after a traffic violation.

Sterner said when he was taken into a booking room and told to stand up, Jones grew agitated when he told her that he could not.

"She was irked that I wasn't complying to what she was telling me to do," he told The Tampa Tribune. "It didn't register with her that she was asking me to do something I can't do."

Jones has been suspended without pay, and Sgt. Gary Hinson, 51, Cpl. Steven Dickey, 45 and Cpl. Decondra Williams, 36 have also been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.

"The actions are indefensible at every level," Chief Deputy Jose Docobo said. "Based on what I saw, anything short of dismissal would be inappropriate."

He said the officers' actions were an aberration.

A woman who answered Jones' telephone said Jones was unavailable. A message left at a telephone number listed for a Steven Dickey in Tampa was not immediately returned Tuesday night. Listings for Hinson and Williams could not be located.

"That none of the supervisors acted upon what they saw is of great concern," Docobo said. "This is not the norm at the sheriff's office."

Sterner was arrested at his Riverview home and taken to the jail Jan. 29 on a charge of fleeing and attempting to elude a police officer, according to records. He posted $2,000 bond and was released Feb 3.

A warrant for Sterner's arrest was issued after an Oct. 25 incident, in which Tampa police stopped him in Ybor City. He was stopped while driving a Mini Cooper that had been fitted with hand pedals and was cited for blocking an intersection.

"My client was stopped that night and was given a traffic citation, so how could he be fleeing and eluding?" Sterner's lawyer John Trevena said. "We're very skeptical about the basis for the charge itself."

Trevena said he hopes authorities investigate the deputies for criminal charges. He said he was "mortified" when he watched the footage.

"I couldn't believe that a detention deputy would be so callous toward an individual, whether they were disabled or not," he said.

On Sterner's MySpace page, the 32-year-old cites interests that include wheelchair rugby, yoga, art shows and documentaries.

I can't wait to hear the officers justification for this assault.

Outrageous indeed. How does one justify such an action? Is there really a mechanism in the human psyche that allows one to truly believe that such an act is justified? Or is the power of rationalization so great that the cad truly accepts as fact that there was nothing wrong in dumping that man onto the floor? I just cannot relate to the thought process that says" hey, I know, I'll just throw the guy onto the floor, yeah that'll work".

May the heavens have mercy on such soulless people.

I believe the answer to your question is that "Absolute power, corrupts absolutely". Too many police are in love with their power. They eventually feel they can do anything and mostly...who is to tell them they can't but other police officers?...many of whom feel just like they do. So no one except a court of law when a case like this goes down. Just imagine what they did in less informed times and before everyone had a cell phone or a hand held video camera!

back in school i knew a guy in the dorms with some sort of handicap, MS maybe. he could get around on crutches. but relied on a wheelchair most of the time. the local meter pigs towed his car one night.

he didn't have the money to get it back immediately, but went down to the impound yard to try and retrieve the chair. the bastards wouldn't let him get it. we saw to it that the story made the local paper. took days though. by that time he had the money, got the car. and the impound prig never actually apologized.

Wow... I am having a tough time coming up with a devil's advocate argument on this one. I don't want to jump to this conclusion, but unless this guy also has a history of assaulting children or something, that is a really bad cop that needs her badge removed.

In the video, one cop does the dumping, another stands by and says/ does nothing while a third one laughs. Clearly this is not one atypical cop acting alone.
I was interested in insights into the situation from a cop's perspective, that is not the same as defending the situation.
I see some truely contemptible behaviour in my profession also, I'm not trying to bait cops here or trying to goad others into pouring 5h.t on them. I am genuinely interested in what they have to say.

In Texas they would just beat hell out of you at the back of their car(no camera) Looks like assault to me, just like the Dude from Baltimore on the little kid. They need to go to jail, directly to jail, do not pass go, have fun in portective isolation. NO WAY is this the first time that group has abused a prisoner

Florida. That's as far as I had to read. I swear to God the worst a-hole, jarhead-type cops I've ever encountered were in FL. I don't know whether it's because the state naturally attracts so many deadbeats and crackheads and losers and they have to be trained that way or whatever, but the percentage of jack-booted goon squad "poleizei" types with insatiable god complexes down there is WAY higher than anywhere else I've ever lived.

FWIW I did meet a few good, honest cops that exemplified the term "to protect and serve" while living down there too, but I can attest first-hand to the fact that FL cops are generally more like a paramilitary unit than a public service police force.

LOL Jeff...like CA cops are any better. No excuse for behavior in the video...too bad the ones who will pay the multi-million $ personal injury settlement will be the taxpayers.

The more I hear and see about Florida, the more I think it must be some kind of third-world country. Why does all the crazy stuff seem to be in Florida?

This, coming from a resident of California, has got to be the quote of the year.

What is it with the superiority complex that most people in CA have about their state? This could be a thread of its own. I've lived in CA, FL, TN, NC, and OH...trust me, no state has a monopoly on fruits, nuts, and flakes, even granola California! Good and bad cops are everywhere...remember the YouTube with the LAPD repeatedly slamming a retarded kid's head on the hood of his car?
