There is something appealing about a car that you can drive across the country, and if something breaks, you can pick up parts at any local Autozone...

I did the obvious. I bought a Corvette to go along with my 911......
My Vette is in an entirely different performance realm than my 911. My 911 is more fun. (its more fun to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slow). It was down to a Cayman or Vette. I am a Porschefile, but the Vette was soo much better performing than the Cayman. I do realize the image, (don't care) and the fact the interior should say "Made by Rubbermaid". Getting hot, dumb girls to check out your ride is an advantage of the corvette. The porsche brings a classier, but more high maintenance version of the fairer sex. |
I've driven the new Z06, and the car is a great value for the performance. Yes, they have the cheese-factor, and I wouldn't buy one myself, but they are quite good. Interior felt a bit cheap, but that's my only critique. Actually much the same as a Ferrari 550 in terms of acceleration and handling, braking -- just a bit less refined, but that's not necessarily bad in my book. I hope in the future they go in a different direction with the car (lighter, mid-engined turbo?) but I'm not holding my breath

That is a disturbing photograph.

You brought up a few other salient points...the most important of which is that you don't care what others think about your choice of ride. IMHO, that is the right arc. And I bet the a/c on the 'Vette doesn't suck. |

I put 84k miles on my 99 C5 6spd hardtop (the one they based the subsequent Z06 on). It had the handling package and was lightly modded to about 385 hp. The car was a rocket, handled, shifted and braked well. Felt big but C5s and C6s are lighter than same year Porsches. I wouldn't have ever considered a Vette prior to the C5 - Chevy really began getting it right with that model.
So, I had my "Corvette Experience" and now have my 82SC RoW (which I'll keep forever). It's much more fun at sane speeds. The Vette needs space, lots of space, to appreciate (around town it's no more exhilarating to drive than a Jeep Grand Cherokee). Incidentally, the Corvettes, like it or not, are quicker and faster than the Porsches - at a ton less money. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1203637684.jpg |
I would definitely drive it.

For me it's one of those I've always kind of wanted one kind of things. At nearly 54 I'll probably never have one because I have my sights set on a highly modded 993tt or slightly used 997tt. One my wife will actually take a ride with me in. I really have no problem with the looks and especially the performance of the vette. I live in such a small town there are not that many around so nobody can compare to mullets or gold chains.

Its funny, 2 posts after you DARISC states his 385HP 3300lb+ car was a rocketship and you think a 360HP (320RWHP) 2800 lb car is not fast? Or that a Z06 is faster and he could not handle it? BTW - his was a C5 with the standard 350 HP motor in it. He always commented how fast it was but that the RX7 blew his mind. |
So someone is giving me a Corvette, and I'm supposed to have to think about it? Fast. Handles. Free. Pretty simple, isn't it? Yes, image is a problem, but it is with a Porsche too, we just ignore that, don't we? No, people don't think we are all sophisticated sportsmen because we drive Porsches. Don't delude yourself.

They are going to be competing in the GT2 class this year also. Myself, I'm with a few of the others, I'd sell to turbo, ground up restro my Carrera. |

I would drive it like I stole it if a C6 was handed to me!
A little OT... Talking about Mullet wearing Vette owners, which I have never met! Anyone ever meet this crowd before? LOL I do at least once a weekend in my 930. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1203640948.jpg |

YES.
This is the only gm car that I would consider owning. -I like large engines, and I especially like the way that an even-firing V8 engine sounds. Listen- there is not a person on this website that would have a problem with the way that my current '85 928S2 sounds with its' 928 Intl.com Borla exhaust and Lois Ott X-pipe. My car with this exhaust is just road-going aggression, and I get people in traffic pulling up next to me and saying "That thing isn't supposed to sound like that! Did you do a chevy conversion", et cetera. Just the sound of the engine burbling is enough to shut down 90 percent of the populance. We have a term for this in 928-land: "BWAAAAAA" The corvette automobile is a product that up until recently, has been totally mismanaged. gm did what they usually do, in their utter state of mis-management, and let the bean-counters cheap-out this car to the point that it wasn't even any competition for Porsche's proper products. My 1985 Porsche got into an informal street race in Orlando in 2000, and I put a couple of car lengths on the '98 corvette that the kid was driving. 13 years of technology later, their car still can't keep up with me. And I have an engine 1.0 liters smaller! Anyway, as of late the gm division known as "chevrolet" has gotten its act together with regard to this car. Though it still squeaks over every bump, and the seats SUCK from what people that own them have told me, this vehicle is now a viable alternative to a 928. You know the 928: the V8-powered car that Porsche produced starting in 1978.... Wasn't that 30 years ago-? N! |
