It's not what you think.

I have two 911s in the garage. Both are very, very nice but not perfect so there are minor projects waiting for me. So why do I keep looking at other cars to buy? Not to replace the Porsches but to add to the stable. I don't have time to drive what I have as it is but still I keep looking. I'm on craigslist daily looking for that nice E30, Miata, S2000, Mercedes 4Matic AMG wagon, BMW touring wagon, 2002 tii, Magnum PI 308, MGB, Alfa Graduate...the list goes on and on. Sooner than later I will bite and then be miserable. I added on a third driveway because I have no room on which to park the cars I have now.

What the heck's wrong with me? I'm thinking that since variety is the spice of life but married life has been good to me, I'd rather play the field with cars than with other women. That's what I tell my wife anyway. She just thinks I'm nuts.

One only needs one spoon to eat with, so why do I keep on looking for and buying spoons. To some extent it is the treasure hunt of finding something rare and exotic and more valuable then what you pay for it that is the draw and not the actual ownership.

The trick is to buy it, pet it, and turn it over to someone else to do the same. Then move on to the next one. Thats the smart thing to do...but I am not smart. I stack em up to the ceiling and then still want more...Mother says I a very sick indivdual...will someone please help me...

I went through that most of my life. I'd keep a car max 16 months and then sell and get something else. Luckily I acknowledged my sickness and only bought used cars to minimize the $$ depreciation. I'm 46 now and for the first time, ever, I'm not coveting other people's cars. Would I like another 911 right now? Of course, but I'm not miserable waiting for the right time.

It must be that old "hunter / gatherer" thing.

I know it is just deeply coded genes, and so I go on knowing I am just completing my destiny and there is nothing I can do to stop.

So far: '55 Chevy 5 window Series I PU,
'65 356SC
'68 912 bought for the steel RSR flairs someone had put on 30+ years ago
'69 911E
'72 911T speedster rsr project 3.2ss MFI slides
'72 911T ST project 3.5 EFI
'72 911T RSR project 2.8ss MFI Hi Butterfly

Now to just get some of them done.

I stopped with the cars a along time ago. At one time I had 6 cars. A Ford Ranger (daily driver), A 69 Mustang Mach 1 428 SCJ, a 66 Corvette 427/425 HP matching numbers car, a 70 Dodge Challenger 440 6 Pack, a 69 911S and a 76 RR LWB. Three of those cars I was restoring at the same time.

I still have the Mustang and Porsche with a Ford 150 as a daily driver. The reason I never restored the 911S was because I successfully completed an aversion thearpy program called getting tired of spending money on cars. However that is not to say that I havn't moved on to other forms of self abuse such as spending money on spoons.

There is nothing wrong with buying, petting and moving on if a few more dollars are in your pocket because you bought and sold it. Even if you should break even thats ok. I am finally figuring that out. Its called going broke hoarding.

You're "one sick puppy."

Collecting stuff like guns and cars is perfectly understandable, but "kitchen utensils"???

That's just "sick."

Mother has more often than not after a gin and tonic or two has said, "What am I raising here a little pansy who likes spoons? Why couldn't I have a son who is a real man who collects guns or cars."

Well, whatever it is, I have it too. I learned that Land Rover ownership is like dating a smokin' hot chicky babe...who's cheating on you. Incredibly rewarding one minute yet exceptionally painful the next. Yet here I am with a great little suv, and I'm trolling Craigslist looking at Range Rovers. My wife is my savior in all this- if I buy another Land Rover she'll probably cut my balls off. But it doesn't stop my wandering eye!

Cheers,

Paul.

Two things, no Three, three things.

1. I can't drive 55 either.

2. There is nothing wrong with you.

3. That will be 75.00.

Seriously, if you aren't screwing up your retirement, where's the harm ? Cars really can't make you happy though, if you are experiencing a lack in your life. But that doesn't mean you can't be happy with a car.

Yes but you can still use them when you are hungry so it does have some merit.

There is AA there are support groups for Drugs gambling etc... yet there is nothing for car addictions.

I feel you brother.

I have so much invested in my RX7 is just stupid. But it brings me so much joy.

In a way I had to get rid of my 911 or else I was going to spend thousands I did not have ready on suspension upgrades.

I was just thinking today, my next fun car will be a Factory Five Cobra while trying to convince the wife she needs a JCW MINI Cooper S or a BMW 5 Series...... I have issues as well.
