$1.49 Gasoline

That was the price of gas when Dubya took office.

And probably $1.00 of it was taxes to fund government bureaucracy.

Indeed. I have to agree. Republicans build incredibly expensive gubmit agencies. This current guy is the all time heavyweight champion of gubmit spending. That follows a pattern. The last guy to balance the budget, now who was that? Oh yeah, Clinton.

The last time we had runaway gas prices was during the Carter administration. OPEC was formed, production was rolled back and prices went through the roof. It more than quadrupled then, causing runaway inflation. Dubya was not able to manage a quadrupling of gas prices (though he gave it a good try), but I just wonder what his final economic numbers are going to look like compared to Carter's. My guess is we will have a new Whipping Boy in terms of the most terrible White House administration of all time.

Whats your point?

Jimmy Carter, one of you guys' favorite Whipping Boys, happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong, time. The formation of OPEC and the deliberate reduction in oil production that led to very troublesome inflation.

Today, we have a similar economic condition surfacing. But this time, none of the causes were outside Dubya's control. $4.00 per gallon gas prices are the direct result of his decisions. This is what we call a "Republican Administration." The economy is all about spending, and this sharp increase in everyone's biggest expense is.....victorious. I'll bet you guys are very proud.

I disagree...the 1974 embargo was the shot across the bow. Since then, administrations and congress...of BOTH parties have done nothing to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

Plenty of blame to go around, if you ask me. But it's OK, Super...I shoulda known you'd blame it only on Bush.

So, do you really think Hillary or Obama will get us back to $1.49 per gallon gas?

It is not just that Jimmy was in the wrong place at the wrong time my friend. It was more that he was the worst President we have had since I have been alive, and was worse as an ex-President than he was as a President(which is no small feat), in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I was not aware that President Bush is in total control of the economies in India and China, from where the bulk of the increase in demand for oil has come. He was in charge of the 9/11 attacks? I had heard that, but since you know about it I must be misinformed.

Nothing to see here.

And Regan was lucky to follow him?

Horray, another narrow-sighted thread blaming Bush for all our problems! We haven't had one of these for what, 5 minutes? Seriously Supe, while I think you're a borderline socialist, I also find you to be an intelligent guy. This is below you.

SO, if this holds true, I expect gas to be $1.49+inflation if Hil or Obama wins. Otherwise, you owe me for the difference. I accept cashier checks or Paypal.

Some of these deflections are very good-sounding, and would work on anyone who doesn't know what's going on.

I've got an idea. Let's pretend that the President has no control over stuff like this, and that the Iraq War thing has not impacted oil prices. Let's do that until a Democrat takes office, and then return to reality.

I guess you missed my post in Jan of '07 when I paid $1.74/gallon. Was Bush the president then? Sorry, about that Supe, I did not mean to devalue your post a bit.....carry on with the banter.

I know I'll end up kicking myself for asking but please, enlighten us. How is $100 per bbl of crude Bush's fault, and what could he have done to prevent the rise of crude?

I have an idea too! Stop drinking whatever kookaide you drinking these days because its not working!

The Democrats have been in control for over a year and its done nothing but steadily get worse!

The war has done nothing but get safer with the "surge" cutting down on the bombings and that was not their doing either...

Well then. This is an amazing series of coincidences. Tell me Joe. When a cue ball strikes an object ball and the object ball immediately move away, are we curious about that chain of events?

Oh, that clears up why gas prices fluctuate based on supply/demand. Thanks for clearing that up..... So when gas went down to $1.74 14 months ago it was because the dems in congress hit a lucky bank shot?
