We're Jewish
Just had someone ring the bell. Maybe Jehovahs Witnesses, not sure. Wanted to invite us to an "event".
Very politely thanked them, and as I handed their literature back responded, "We're Jewish". Stops em cold every time. They never have a response other than "Uh, OK". Their state of confusion and lack of anything to say always gives me a chuckle and the perfect opportunity to wish them a good day and close the door. Disclaimer: The wife is really Jewish and the kids are being raised Jewish as is the tradition. I also do not have an issue with the JW's. Every one of them that has ever knocked on the door has been very pleasant and polite.

We have that missionary kinds too. Although I usually stick to: We are atheist and you better respect our lack of belief or else..!! They usually give me a disgusted frown and leave me laughing my head off in the hallway.

LOL, I'm Lutheran and my religion has a reputation of middle of the road, moderate, not pushy or extreme in any way.
There's a joke I've heard that's pretty funny: What's the difference between a Lutheran and a Jehovah's witness? When a Lutheran knocks on your door he doesn't have anything to say

JW's have always been very polite and take any rebuff in stride. Kinda hard to imagine any group could be like that, huh?

I was camped in the Smokys for over 5 days next to a group of real bible thumpers out on some seminar, retreat, or something. I had no idea what was going on till another local filled me in after a few days. They were somewhat just as mellow as the JW's.
nevertheless organized religion is not my thing, although some religious pro said I'm a Buddist mix.. whatever that means. My religion is hard assed NY. Organized chaos is better than organized religion. Sometimes wonder what it was like in ancient Rome for the good times when there were 200 religions in motion.

I swear she stood on my stoop looking at my closed door for like 10 minutes trying to figure out what being Jewish had to do with TV service. I do believe the JW's keep notes. Only had to do it once back in Huntington. After that I'd see them hit the neighbor on one side, pass by my house and wave at me if I was outside, then they'd hit the neighbor on the other side. I give them much respect for respecting me in that way.

Gosh, if you want them to not come back, just engage with them. They work in pairs usually, and a senior and a junior. If you seriously (politely of course) ask them to justify their beliefs, get into some specifics (noah's ark for example).
They are required to not subject themselves to things contrary to their beliefs, so they leave as soon as you start to pose real questions about the logic of what they beleive. Saving your soul is less important than saving their own, you see, which they do through their "works".

The funniest thing I've had happen 'at the door' was when a guy that didn't want to talk to us say:
"No habla Engles". I gave a brief comment in Spanish to his: " I don't speak Spanish, either". Guys, why not enjoy a one to two minute neighborly exchange? If you don't want to talk about the Bible, we'll leave. Does it really hurt you to be polite to strangers? KT
