Guitarists... what's this chord?

At 1:04 Dave plays an E chord. What's the next chord? (1:06)

I am sitting in a hotel room without guitar in hand to test but it sounds like an E to me. Check out his hand from behind, it kinda looks like E postioning too. Try it out and see if it works.

It's a "D" chord, but with F# being the bottom note, instead of D.

What do I win?

Is it ok if I'm not a guitarist?

That works, but Dave's playing something different. I think I'm getting closer, but the arthritis is setting in from playing the rest of the song. My fingers just don't want to stretch that way!

+1 ...Gogar hit it dead on...that is the next chord that he strums after the E.

F# in the bass (2nd fret 1st string) mute the A string, but you can play it if you want
then play the open D, the A on the G string and D on the B string..normally I dont play the high E string
because im out of fingers at that point unless I want some Dadd9 sound with the E, which resolves nicely back to the E chord again if you want.

His G string may be just a touch flat, when he frets the A on that string it sounds slightly flat which may be what you are hearing that sounds a little different, Lee... there are 2 guitarists there playing essentially the
same thing so there is a little 'chorusing' effect sounding because the 2 guitars are slightly out of tune from
each other.

D 6/3 (figured bass) or more commonly called (1st inversion) due to the 3rd of the chord appearing as the "bass" note.

I'll have to take your word on that. I've barely graduated from "Michael Row Your Boad Ashore" and really have no business trying to play Dave Mathews.

At 3:00 on the video the fingering is almost visible. Seems to be something different than D.

Lee,

Its a D, man. I'm sorry I'm not a guitar player, But similar to what SonicDB said if you

Fret 2 on the low E String with your middle (flip off finger)
Leave the A string open.
Mute the D string with your ring finger.
fret 2 on the G string with your index finger
and fret three on the B string with your pinky.
Don't play the high E string.

Look at 3:01-3:02.

The thing about looking at the shapes is that you are assuming the guitar is in standard tuning. But, in this song, I think it is, so that's nice. And, there's more than one way to skin a horse, or a D, I mean.

Good luck, man!

I don't know much about the technical details of music and making it which may be why some of the info that you guys are posting seems so darn impressive.

I wish I did. I've got good rhythm. But I don't know poo about making music.

Actually no 6th degree of the D chord (which is B) is being played...at least not that is audible, and a 6th chord has a distinct sound (think end chord of some early Beatles songs...yeah, yeah, yeah, yeaaaah) but the figured bass of the F# 3rd is definately there... this is a very useful chord for playing the descending bass lines on the E string thing (While my Guitar Gently Weep... Babe Im Gonna Leave You) etc... nice transitional chord but Dave is using it in a different capacity there.

listening again to that DM live cut...those 2 guitars are painfully out of tune with each other, imo lol!
i wonder if they were going for that type of sound...probably one of the guitars just fell out of tune during
the course of the gig... definiately not studio tight though...anyone else hear this?

Actually, sonic, rouxroux wasn't talking about chord symbols the way you are. He's referring to 'figured bass' notation, which is a different thing. First inversion in 'figured bass notation' is commonly referred to with a 6 (or 6/3, but rarely), or 6/4 for 2nd inversion.

In a fake book where you might see C/E for example, you'd play a C chord but have E in the bass (first inversion.) In theory class, using figured bass notation, you could write the C chord out on a staff with a little tiny 6 (or 6/3) directly under the musical notes.

In a fake book, if you saw C with a 6 next to or over it, then yes, you would play C with an A somewhere in there.

You're both right!

Thx...I remember that (slightly) now that you mention it....from Music Theory 101 days...but probably since it is not used as much for guitarists....or in most common charts/notations these days (as opposed to D/F# for example) is why i wasnt thinking that way....but totally you and rouroux are 100% correctamundo.

"Figured bass, or thoroughbass, is a kind of integer musical notation used to indicate intervals, chords, and nonchord tones, in relation to a bass note. Figured bass is closely associated with basso continuo, an accompaniment used in almost all genres of music in the Baroque period, though rarely in modern music.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Figured_bass

i gotta get more Baroque in my game

Sorry if I was a bit too "technical"...But as a retired band director figured bass came into play quite alot in my work. (And yes, it does get a bit hairy sometimes when you're doing a session and some of the "younger guys" think it is a "Chord symbol" (or change as in a fake book).

no worries...you werent too technical at all... when I read your post I was confused by the simplicity of the apparent question and I knew that you would know better...so my bad on not thinking hard enough... i remember figured bass now that you mention it, but that was semester 1 of Music Theory 101 back in 1990 or so... lol and it just isnt used much at all in my world...in fact even now that Im working with orchestration its not something that musicians of today are using so much with notation...particularly with jazz......however you know your stuff totally if you are bringing up that type of notation!

im glad that i was reminded of this type of notation!

Ok. I think I've got it now... at least I will with some practice.

Thanks for the help. I figured out there were dozens of covers on YouTube where I could see what folks were playing. It's interesting that there are many different ideas on this chord.
