So I'm watching "Atonement".....

OMG this is awful, I'm about 80 minutes in and I'm considering euthanasia. This movie cuts me repeatedly on the elbow with razors then dips it in vinegar.

Ha! My daughter LOVED that movie. She begs me to go see it. Thanks for the heads up.

The end is semi-interesting, but it's not worth the agony of the first 110 minutes.

I've met the director, Joe Wright, but haven't seen it yet. Really that bad?

He's a charming fellow; really maddeningly young and talented, a good friend is in the movie he is currently filming.

Me too. The DVD is sitting on the table that my wife brought home a few days ago. After seeing the trailer, I'm basically envisioning a variation of the The Engish Patient gone horribly wrong.

I'm still formulating a plausible excuse to avoid watching it.

You can avoid watching it by saying you read the book. Then you can sound intelligent when you say the movie is rarely better than the book, which in the case of "Atonement" is supposedly true.

I haven't seen it, but it smacks of the mother of all chick flicks!

There is so much nothing in the middle it's insane. The plot line allows for all kinds of drama but none is forthcoming. Would-be interesting characters are never developed or even followed for that matter. It's just bland, painfully bland.

How many books have you read that were better than the movie? I can't think of even one.

I guess the director is more maddeningly young than maddeningly talented if the movie sucks that much ass. Must have been a weak script, that is the problem in Hollywood, no quality scripts.

Every single book I've read that was later made into a movie was better than the movie.

Funny, but I can only think of one movie that I thought was better than the book - "Dune". I liked the movie Dune better than the book, but that's the only one I can think of.

I worked on his latest "The Soloist" w/ Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr. That should be a better flick.

You've clearly never had the pleasure of sitting through the hideous film adaption of The Great Gatsby.

Somewhere in Maryland, Scott Fitzgerald is still slightly rotating in his grave, 30+ years later after that one.

Tim, I think we agree, BTW, I thought the Dune flick sucked, and really liked the series of books

My wife really wanted to watch this movie after all the hype it seemed to get and several people (who presumably hadn't seen it) saying how great it was. So we sat down to watch it the other evening and I thought it was utter bo11ocks. What's more she agreed it was total waste of two hours.
The story may have been slightly intrigueing but it dragged and was totally transparent. I couldn't get into the characters at all so felt no pity for any of them. I really couldn't have cared less. As for the 'twist' - I'd have preferred a Scooby Doo ending.

What? Is there on Old Caretaker and Meddling Kids involved? Another reason to avoid it, I guess.
