Junior Prom. What to expect...

When I was in HS, the Junior Prom meant dinner at a nice restaurant then dance at the prom and home by 2 AM or so. That's long gone, I guess.

My son is going to his junior prom. He's a great kid. Never been in any kind of trouble. No drugs or alcohol. He does well in school and he has earned my trust. He's only been on a few dates. Never anything serious. But now there's this...

My sons prom date is a 20 year old college girl. She's a fun girl with a bit of a "party" reputation. She's a very pretty young lady. My son is a big guy. Looks much older than he is. He's 6' 2" tall and about 190 pounds, but he's still just 17 years old! And now he tells me that the Junior Prom involves a "pre-party", the prom and then the "after-party". In other words, don't expect him home till morning. Yikes!!!!

What do you guys think?

I'm going to have to see a pic of the 20 year old woman to make an educated decision.

When my daughter had her grad night party, it was an overnight deal at a water park. Pretty common practice for kids to get hotel room for party on prom night. He is a minor, so technically, if she does him it is statutory rape. Pre-party? Booze, drugs, orgy, what does this entail?

You know him pretty well, is he trustworthy?

I know a lot of schools are seriously addressing this.

If you show up with booze either in your possession or on your breath you can forget about getting in.

Some schools have the local POPO's doing vehicle searches at the entrance to the event and any contraband is confiscated, admission is denied, and there is the possibility of fines.

You should check and see what they plan and make sure your son is aware of the consequences.

Been there done that. My son was a soph going with a senior that was wilder than a peach orchard boar. She could have turned him every which way but loose but I guess she didn't. It was his first serious gf and he made it through alright. They did the same things you're son is going to do. He always went for the older girls and I'm sure did anything he wanted.

Strangely he is 19 now and going with a girl who is 17. We worry about that one because he goes to school in Austin Tx 500 miles from here and she flies down about every 3 weeks to spend weekends. In fact next week is spending the entire weekend down there on her spring break. We can't believe her parents let her either. If we didn't really like her we'd try to cool their jets but it is really hard to do anything we have no real control over. As a buddy of mine used to say, "they're going to do what they want to do".

I'm sure your son will be ok. The school here doesn't allow kids out of school to even go to the prom.

I think this makes him instant BMOC. A date like this can pay great dividends..

I hope he get less lucky than he wants to be, but otherwise has a great time.

Prom was a spending contest at my highschool. It was all about who could show up in the most ridiculous limo/most exotic sports car/most expensive dress/most expensive tux/most expensive jewelry/etc... Kids routinely spent tens of thousands of dollars. This was 10+ years ago in Naperville. I can't imagine it has gotten any better.

I boycotted every school dance in high school--and I have not a tinge of regret about it either. We would get all of our friends together and hang out on Prom night rather than going to the dance.

He should skip it altogether and take his young lady friend to a secluded location on the beach, sit with her on a blanket drinking champagne and making (safe) wild love all night like drunken monkeys until the sunrise, then fall blissfully asleep until noon.

You know I pondered this myself................................I'm 48yr/O and I remember at my HS in Va that it really was sex/drugs/alcohol/ rock and roll until dawn the next day. I look back and most of the girls that I knew were treating it like it was their 'turning out' party. As in full lingerie, stockings, birthcontrol in hand (or somewhere else).

I guess I must be getting very conservitive because I look at kids today at that age and go ............are you kidding? I do believe we were a little young for that ***** at that age. I do think the schools are doing the right thing by watching more closely and governing what goes on

Give him a high-five, a box of rubbers (that will embarrass him enough for a year), and the admonition that a) making babies is all wrong and b) it's statutory rape for her.

Or just grab a bottle of wine and go into denial. It's not just a river in Egypt, but a comfortable place to be...

You said that you trust him. Why stop now?

Believe me, I have 3 daughters and I am not looking forward to this. All any of us can hope is that they take their values that we have given them along with them when they face these challenges.

You son is a stud for dating a 20 year old. On the other hand the 20 year old is a bit goofy going to a HS prom. Tell him to get ribbed rubbers "for her pleasure."

The fact that she's (1) hot and (2) dating a junior in high school means either your son is (1) hooking her up with good drugs or (2) hung like a prairie roaming animal. Or both.
