Fresh Squeezed OJ

Why is it SO much better than bottle OJ? Of course, I am talking about NOT from concentrate bottle OJ.

I am surmising that the difference comes from the pasteurizing process, where I assume the heating damages the taste.

Man, this glass of OJ I just squeezed is frickin great! 2 homemade chocolate chip cookies and a glass of fresh squeezed OJ. Mmmmmmmmm

We squeeze too.... sometimes. It takes a lot to make a little. We have a valencia type orange tree that gives all year through. Tasty stuff. But, the wife brings home oj from the store regularly.

It is currently 96 degrees! Cold OJ and alcohol sounds good......

Curious, how many oranges did it take to make a glass? How big is the glass?

Valencia orange season is March through June, so right now we get more juice per orange. I would guesstimate about 1.5 to 2 oz per orange. You can get more or less depending on methods like hand or electric juicer and how much pulp you can tolerate.

Our tree is somewhat overgrown atm and while we get more fruit, it is smaller than if the tree was less populated.

I think Valencia's are better for squeezing and Navels are better for eating. YMMV.

Currently 97 ******* degrees today here! Those oranges are going to be tasty....

We had a grocery store here that had a machine that would peel, squeeze, and bottle fresh orange juice.

Of course it has gone away because someone deemed it unhealthy due to being raw and unpasteurized.

But man it was GREAT while it lasted.

An 8oz glass took me about 4 oranges (Valencia) so about 2oz per orange sounds right.

I use a glass juicer thingy where you cut the orange in half and grind the sucker down by hand.

So does anyone know the answer to the original question?

I had some natural OJ once that had fermented into an alcoholic thing, which I actually threw out after tasting. Wasn't too sure what it fermented into.

I love OJ (especially freshly-squeezed) & I love chocolate chip cookies. But OJ & chocolate chip cookies together does not sound good at all. In fact, it sounds terrible. You have it all wrong. Warm chocolate chip cookies & milk. Geesh....

We used to live in Florida & there was a place down the road that sold freshly-squeezed OJ by the gallon. It was delicious.

It's because it's not pasteurized...as in, heated to the point where the taste noticeably shifts - as well as killing off much of the nutritional value.

Years ago, many years ago, my father was a buyer for A&P foods. We would have fresh fruit from the south in mid january, including fresh oranges. We had a machine that sqeezed the juice out of fresh oranges and I've always had a taste for fresh, there is no other. If you taste the stuff out today and the pure from then, you would wonder why its sold today.

It is too bad that most Vodka does not come from spuds. Actually very few are available in the US that are "tater squeezin's" most are neutral grain spirits.

there may be chemicals that either break down right away or volatilize quickly

It might be the folic acid that gives it the taste. I live in "citrus country", and the Valencias are the best juicing oranges. We get 20lbs for $5. They are replacing the orange groves with avacado and nursery plants, yanking out a lot of the Valencia trees.

I have an avacado tree and lemon in my backyard, the avacados are "Fuertes" and the lemons make the best lemonade (the juice peels paint).

A 'Juice-O-Mat" works great for that quick OJ
