In the minutes before 7 p.m. on March 1, 1973, a routine diplomatic reception was breaking up at the Saudi embassy in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan. But as the ambassadors left the party and disbursed to find their drivers, a volley of machine-gun bullets suddenly interrupted the quiet scene. Eight masked gunmen of Black September, a covert Palestinian organization, burst out from the shadows and commandeered into the embassy's main reception room all those not fleet of foot enough to escape. The gunmen sent out a leaflet with their demands, which included the freeing from Jordan of many Palestinians, including Abu Daoud, a leader of the Black September Organization; the freeing of Sirhan Sirhan, Robert Kennedy's killer, from jail in California; and the freeing of "Palestinian women in prison in Israel."

Twenty-six hours of feverish negotiations then went by. On the evening of the 2nd, the Beirut headquarters of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) sent an order of execution to the terrorists via radio broadcast: "Why are you waiting? The people's blood in the Cold River cries for vengeance" ("Cold River" was the code word for executing the captives). Recordings of that call have suspiciously disappeared, but it appears that Yasir Arafat, chairman of the PLO then as now, personally delivered this order to murder. Soon after he did, the two Americans and the Belgian were bound, lined up against a basement wall, and executed in gangland fashion - all eight gunmen simultaneously pulling on their triggers.

I voted for the man and thought he was a well meaning but terrible President. Now he's a well meaning but terrible diplomat.

A shame because initially he was the best ex president out there IMO- really using his influence to do good rather than, for example, shilliing for millions and lying at every opportunity. He really should stay at home and write his memoirs or something.

Carter was the first and last Democratic presidential nominee I voted for BTW.

No, he's not well-meaning. I used to think he was. But he's crossed the line way too many times and for far too long. He knows what everyone thinks of his actions and he still does them. He's one of those nuts who truly thinks America is what's wrong with the world and, if he can't really weaken us, he can at least try to hurt our image abroad and make it more difficult for our government, regardless of who's in power, to conduct foreign relations. Sort of a bleed the beast mentality with him. He's a traitor and he should not be allowed to travel. Normally, I'd not suggest revoking anyone's passport. But Carter is a propaganda tool for all America's enemies. I think Lenin called such people "useful idiots."

carter was the worst President in modern times..... God - he was awful... we [USA] were kicked around by every 3d world countery in the universe... then after he "retired" he seemed to be one of the best "ex-presidents".. building houses > habitat for humanity and al that >> then he gets back on the world stage again and starts trying to make US policy .... TOTALLY out of bounds for an ex-president.... he had his shot and blew it.. go back toGA jimmy ..and stay there.....

Well, you cant run around removing evil dictators in order to install the shining beacon of democracy, then complain about the results of same.

Last time I looked, Hamas holds a majority of elected seats in the Palestinian Authority. And that would make it (Hamas) a legitimate political organisation representing the views of Palestinian electorate, in which the bright seeds of democracy have flourished. Allah be praised.

And I'm sure al Qaeda's leadership enjoys the staunch support of their rank and file suicide bombers and garden variety killers too. Doesn't mean we should sit down with them and certainly not lend them the legitmacy and propaganda tool of a high-ranking delegation visit.

I imagine that if Al Qaeda ever stand candidates in free and open elections, and win legitimate office, "we" might have to. Thats the flawed beauty of the democracy we seek to export to the world.

Other than rhetoric, whats Hamas ever done to the United States, BTW? I believe their beef is largely with Israel. But I imagine there is some ill will. I think if my house had been demolished by a huge Caterpiller or a rocket from a McDonnell Douglas F15, or my neighbourhood put under seige by an army almost entirely equipped and funded by the US, I'd be annoyed too.
