I still love the old steam train that goes from Williams to Grand Canyon AZ... nothing like old trains!

A friend is a train buff, subscribes to train magazines, etc. He once sent me an article on one of the largest peacetime train transports of all time. I was a participant. 1957 BSA national Jamboree, Valley Forge, PA. All the scouts arrived by train.

Funniest aside was when there was a problem with the track ahead of us, so our train was placed on a siding near a tiny town (maybe population 200) in North Dakota. We were turned loose. 800 scouts invading the poor town. Had to be the greatest biz day ever seen by this town. When we pulled out, there wasn't a can of pop or a candy bar to be had.

cool site.

That stainless steel 'vista dome' car would make an 'interesting' house.

Wayne - if you've never taken your family here you're missing out. Working steam locomotives, trolleys. Ever rail car you can think of. Model railroading on a huge scale. A nice day trip.

I remember going across country by train. Union Station in LA to Chicago on the UP, then a commuter train on the NY Central to Detroit. I vividly remember stops in LV & Denver. Sat up in the vista liner and watched America roll by.

It is a sorry thing that kids can't do it today. Ya got to see America.

Man, that would make a great house!

I ate in a diner up near Pismo Beach that was a converted rail car (actually two hooked together just like on the tracks).

Naw you don't...these days, every freeway exit, every airport, they all look the same. America has become as homogenized as milk.

We don't disagree often, but you're wrong on that. What ever happened to those travel America shows like Ratzenberger and Kuralt? (sp both?)

"Blue highway" stuff...it's still out there, if you hunt enough. But you won't find it via interstate, air, or rail travel...

Very interesting site.

I agree/disagree with the "homogenized America" comment. What I found from back in my flying days (and I got to stay in some places I'd never even heard of) was that you can always find good or bad anywhere. You have to get out and look for it sometimes, but each area does have something unique to offer.

That said, the "highway exit experience" of traveling cross-country is very, very sterile and boring. From that point of view, every highway exit in America really DOES look like every other highway exit in America. . .

We have become a pretty boring country overall.

Totally agree and was thinking just the other day about taking a train ride. Also want to do the "Trans-Siberian Express" someday...

When most people have to cram their travel/vacation into 10 lousy days off a year, there's little incentive to spend half of those traveling. . . You want to get to your destination ASAP so you can cram in all the activity into that little time and rush home.

This is a big advantage a lot of foreign countries have over us. 4-8 weeks is the standard. Certain careers are better at facilitating this than others, but for most people, you're lucky to get two weeks anymore. You're even luckier if your employer lets you take them all at once (of course this means no time off at the holidays, for kids' birthdays, etc. . .)

Just another example of how we're working busier/harder but earning less and not necessarily working smarter/better today.

I'm a HUGE railfan (hate the term train buff). I volunteer at a museum/tourist railroad here in NJ.http://www.njmt.org/

Seeing America by rail is a great experience. Although I decided to take a ride on Amtrak up from FL last yr. That was horrible experience.

Let me make it clear, traveling by rail you got to see America roll by, and a pace where you got to see things. Now the stations are another matter.

Why has McDonalds been so successful. Cause U can walk into one of their joints in Boston or LA and KNOW your going to get the same quality piece of ***** meal. No guessing to it.

America has become homogenized. It doesn't really matter where you live there is a Walmart on every corner.
