Why wouldn't you let her drive the car? What would be the negative? Its meant to be driven, and its not like its some super rare and expensive model.

So whats the deal dimeified? You felt like you needed to resurrect as old a post as you could find or what?

It all depends on the relationship. My wife and I have been married for 20+ years, we do everything together, sail, run, bike, go on Porsche drives. She bought the 83 911 SC for me as a birthday present and doesn't ask to drive it.

Well...once she did ask and I said, "o/k, let's go together to make sure all your questions are answered". She knows how to drive a standard (her car is a Wrangler w/ standard). So she drove it just fine. I asked her about the gauges. Stuff like, "do you know what's normal temp, oil pressure, and why is the temp normal and oil pressure up and the oil level looks low?" She decided on her own not to drive it because she thought if she ran it out of oil or something she'd feel bad. Insurance covers damage, but not mechanicals, and Porche mechanicals are expensive and she knows it. We still go on long weekend drives and she still drives the car, with me in it. No fights about it ever.

It is extremely unreasonable of you to let your wife drive the car at all.

My g/f knows the rules: Borrowing the Porsche = BJ. Unfortunately, she doesn't ask to borrow it. :)

My wife can't actuate the clutch pedal in my C4, so she can't shift it, and hence, can't drive it.

Otherwise, I'd let her drive it. She parks her car away from everyone elses and is picky as I am when it comes to her car :-)

My wife knows how fussy I am about my toy cars so she never asks to drive it. If something hapened to it she knows that she'd never hear the end of it.
I've had my Turbo since May and she's only ridden in it once and has yet to drive it; most likely she never will.

If i have a hard time handleing big horsepower the wife isnt driving it. Ill wrap it around a tree 1st. I told her that I will buy her one and she can drive it all she wants.

hahaha this great. I solved my problem with letting her do a "test" ride in the 930 with me. 2nd gear, full boost and no performance driving skills=backwards. That solved the "can I take the pcar today" problem.

I think you were definitely unreasonable unless your wife has history of problem (not too careful with cars).

Can't resist to chime in. We got a 964 (1990 C2 Targa) over 4 years ago. We did opt for the car as she hd issues with the clutch at the 88 which we drove first.

3 months later she did her first DE event at Pocono Raceway in PA. Today she is an advanced group driver, orders brake pads, has her own helmet and painted the roll-bar which ended up in my 944 S2 track car (the 911 retired from track duty).

She drove Lime Rock, Watkins Glen and Mid Ohio too. Not to mention autocross.
Also, she refuses to drive automatic / tip - manual only. Loves the sport suspension (read track set-up) and thinks our 330 BMW Ci with sports package drives like a Buick.

Oh, and yes she does park at the mall - far from all other cars and rather walks 5 minutes than to ding the car.

Just take your women to P-car events, let them learn, share the passion and have fun meeting new pople.

My wife can't drive a stick nor is she about to learn. She even said before even if she could she wouldn't want to drive my car. I just make sure I get her something nice before I get a car I want. Before the 911 it was a new minivan, before an M3 it was a nice dining room set. She knows I'm anal about the cars and I don't take a certain car if there is the possibility of a valet and I park further away in certain lots too and shes fine with it. Certain boundaries work for certain marriages or relationships and its a matter of learning bout each other and communicating no right or wrong - my $.02.

Brought back from the dead after 6.5 years, wondered why it looked so odd on the first page.

Depends on if it is a high crime area about parking the car, and shopping mall is a good place to steal a car. My wife likes driving sports cars.

I think you're not being unreasonable at all. Parking lots and the legions of other idiots that use them are the WORST place for a car you care about. If my car is anywhere than in my garage under a cover, I'm worried about it. A parking lot (particularly a mall parking lot) is about the worst possible place someone can take it. Guarantee of door dings, scratches and unwanted attention by less-than-savory individuals with less-than-honorable intentions.
