My Very Informal "Tax Rebate" Survey of CoWorkers
So I've been asking a number of people on one of the features that I'm working on if they're going to get a "tax rebate", and if so, what will they do with the money. Conversely, if they won't get a "tax rebate", but if they did what would they do with the money.
I work with production office people who make OK money, and crew members who make $125K to $250K/year. I also work around Producers who make a million or more a year and actors who make millions, I didn't take to any of these. In general here is what I found. Those who will get a "rebate" most will pay of cc debt and/or put it in the bank. Those who won't get one were kind of split, some will also pay of debt or put it in the bank. BUT a lot said they'd probably buy that big flat screen and/or a blue ray player. Remember, I work in the entertainment industry. My limited very informal survey suggests to me that the Feds should have actually given the "rebates" back to those who actually paid the most taxes and won't be getting a rebate. They are the ones most able to actually spend the money and help the economy. Your mileage may vary.

Sounds like "trickle down economics".
I actually believe in it too. . . to a point.

It makes sense. If my parents were going to get $600 or $1200, it is not terribly significant to them at all. Throwing that in the bank as "savings" is no big deal, and there is no CC debt to pay off. However, we do need to get a new TV for the lake house (or get a TV for home and put the old one at the lake). If they got the rebate, they money would be spent in an instant.
I do have a feeling though that a vast majority of the people getting checks are going to buy a plasma or some rims.

I'm buying a new patio.
Well, the rebate check is getting me 1/3rd of a patio.

We won't be spending extra money because of the check, but the money will make a couple of purchases feel less painful (if that makes any sense). Our washer/dryer are around 12 years old and both are making strange noises. We'd be buying a new set without the check, but the check makes us feel better about it.

I gave up last year and just started paying about $1000 extra each month so I do not have to come up with so much at the end of the year. I hope a lot of those rebate checks end up being spent at Pelican.

That is the government endorsed preferred use of tax dollars after all.

Sadly, I am not getting the rebate, but I did get a few hundred dollars refunded back to me. Been looking at stocks right now or just buy that bike I really would like.

Tax rebate? What's that? My taxes took a big jump this past year, too.

Though I fully understand the angst toward the rebate and I disagree with it entirely on principle, I would much much much much much prefer to be one of those not getting it. Blee dat.
