So who here is into Ham Radio?

-.-. --.- -.-. --.- -.-. --.-
-.. . -.- -... ----. -... --.. ...-
...-.-

I spent part of my afternoon tracking down an audio problem in one of my Yaesu rigs, and wondered how many other Pelicans are hams? I searched and found a few threads with posts but nothing getting us all in one spot.

I got my first ticket while I was in Boy Scouts at the age of 12. (My how the years fly by!!) My dad has always been into it, in fact when I was much younger (before I was licensed) there was an astronaut on the STS-9 space shuttle mission that was a ham (Owen Garriott), we spent almost an entire day at the Purdue Amateur Radio Club trying to contact him (which we finally did). As a side note, there wasn't a tape recorder at the club, so the whole contact was recorded on my fisher-price tape recorder (hey give me a break, I was only 8) Years later when I was enrolled at Purdue, I was the president of the radio club there (W9YB) for 4 years.

Today, I am still an active member of W9YB helping out with contests, fox hunts, field day, antenna days, etc. There is part of me that still hangs on to and loves to use the nostalgic gear. Heathkit SB220, Collins 51s-1, Drake b-line, c-line, Drake TR-3.... the list goes on and on. Ya, anyone need spare tubes

So how many of us are hams?

My father was a ham, since passed away. He was (W1MYZ), probably licensed originally back in the 30's. I never got a big interest going in it but spent a lot of time with my father putting up antennas when we would move from house to house. Originally he built his own stuff, receiver, transmitter and linear amp. Used to do phone patches and emergency work during disasters in parts of the world. He did it for 50+ years and had QSL? cards from other hams all over the world. When he died I had his Yaesu transeiver and gave it to a good friend that was into ham radio. Gave it to the guy in July a couple years ago and you would have thought it was Christmas. I thought the guy was going to wet his pants. Later in life my dad did more 2 meter stuff from his car. He really loved the hobby.

I still have fond memories spending time with him on projects.

Porsche Crest Hams

Hi, I don't get to talk on the "skip"anymore.
But, I do have $0.02/minute for long distance service, and have about 1000 minutes to use up by August. Shoot me your phone number, and I can call, instead of using the big radio.
Heck, all of us here are real hams at times. Tony.

Never got into it, but I guess I shoulda (or still should) for the proto-geek experience, esp. now that morse isn't required...

What fascinates me about ham is the Ham-to-IP gateways, packet radio, etc. In otherwords, networking with Ham.

For those of you that want to look into this, there is TONS of Ham support in the Linux kernel and tons of apps as well.

Used to work under DJ0PV but that was overseas and years ago. I still have a old Hallicrafters receiver and a Kenwood 440AT on the bench but it has not been turned on in years.

Funny thing is that I sometimes listen to ham while flying. On long overwater flights we are always working HF and I sometimes take the backup radio and run through the freqs and see who's on and whats going on. Never got my license years ago but on the plane I can transmit to my hearts content, so its fun and breaks the boredom of 10 hour flights over lots of blue.

I grew up listening to the BBC and VOA on an old Heathkit that I built. Guess thats part of the reason I have a job where I travel so much as traveling the world has always been interesting.
