Selling Alaska

This is simply a hypothetical exercise; I like Alaska and the Alaskans I have met.

Alaska comprises 570,373 square miles. There are 640 acres per square mile so Alaska is approximately 365,038,720 acres.

Assuming, for the sake of this thread, the USA could find a buyer. Maybe the proceeds could pay off/down the national debt?

Also assume Uncle Sam could offer terms.

How much is it worth?

Best,

Heres the info on the original purchase:

Quote:
The area that became Alaska was purchased from the Russian Empire on March 30, 1867, for 7.2 million dollars (at 2 cents per acre).
From Wikipedia.

"Seward's Folly" they called it! Ha!

We would get a lot more for SoCal. I propose we sell that IMMEDIATELY and cut the national debt even more, as well as get rid of a lot of those liberals living there.

I'd actually support CA secession. I imagine we'd be better off out here without having to carry the dead weight of all the recipient states who get the benefit of our "donor state" tax dollars.

As the 6th-largest economy in the world, I imagine we'd do just fine for ourselves.

With the national debt at about $9.35T, Alaska would need to sell for about $25,500/acre to pay it off. It's interesting to note that the US runs on a cash flow basis; anyone ever seen a model of a balance sheet for America?

BTW, California is not the extreme liberal caricature of a state as some of you folks seem to think and express here. Joe, you know better.

Sure it has its extreme pockets, but overall the state is fairly balanced, IMHO. Bush carried it in '88, Reagan carried it in '80 and '84 and it's been close by the popular vote in the past two elections - Clinton did stomp Dole in '96.

FWIW.

Dude, wake up. We already sold So Cal to Mexico. They just haven't quite finished unpacking yet.
