The uWatch

FYI if anyone is interested. $150 DIY kit for RPN scientific calculator watch. Very geeky. Presumably not waterproof. Limited practical need. So I'm getting one. Firmware will be open-source, so hoping someone will add financial functions (personally not that interested in learning PIC programming).

PIC programing is almost exactly like BASIC...

I'm an idiot and was able to figure enough of it out to do some simple stuff here at work.

RPN all the way!!! My HP 41CV has been my constant companion since I bought it new in 1982. I think I'll skip the watch, though.

Is it airport security friendly? I can see that causing a problem.

I find it useful to have a calculator handy. I have a really hard time using algebraic. Ideally I want date, time/timing, financial functions in addition to scientific.

The alternative I am thinking about is a Suunto "wristtop computer" which lacks any calculator functions but has date/time/timing, temp/barometric/altitude, compass.

True, my wife thinks the "uWatch" is ridiculous, but in the context of the things about me that she thinks are ridiculous, a nerd watch would be pretty minor.

Will it match my pocket protector and the socks showing under my high-water slacks? I'm an engineer, and even I think that's the dorkiest thing I've ever seen.

As a hobby, I build nice mechanical watches. I source all the parts from Switzerland and dissasemble the movements, clean, lube, reassemble, time, adjust and case them. Basic automatic watch costs me about $375 with the best of everything componenets. Stopwatch funtions add about $100 more. I love a good mechanical watch.

It will if you wrap white adhesive tape around one corner of your black horn rimmed glasses!

I've had a HP 32S rpn since 1989. I love rpn. It's so much simpler than algebraic once you learn to use it. The other nice thing is no one else ever uses my calculator.

As far as an interesting watch with some calculator functionality, I'd like one of these, a slide rule watch.

Citizen makes a nice slide rule watch... solar powered too...

I sold this one off, way cool looking IMHO but the dial was WAY too busy for me.

I should also add that I think it's dorky, and I own a RPN HP graphing calculator.

Don't make me post pictures of the binary watches!

And yes I bought one of those palm pilot abacus watches pictured above... sold it off too because... well... it was too dorky for even me.
