Credit Report / Item in Collection Follow-up

Some (or none) of you may remember the thread I started about a month and a half ago about my soon to be fiance's credit report issue. She had a $56.00 medical item in collection that as far as anyone could tell shouldn't have been there. Well we found a credit board and carefully followed the advice given out.

Fast forward to this weekend when she got… a deletion letter! It turns out the item was an error! Just thought I'd come back and share… I remember a couple of real skeptics and some others that seemed curious because maybe something similar happened to them. I can share the URL to the forum we found the help from once I get home from work if anybody wants it as a resource.

Needless to say, she's elated about this. I'm surprising her by swapping out the old stereo in her Volvo for one that'll connect to her ipod so her week is about to get a little better.

Isn't it amazing how easy it is for them to put a hit on your credit with no accountability at all?

Frustratingly so... I still don't understand what keeps it from coming back, but apparently since her letter said "deletion" it's gone for good.

The whole experience has really helped me to understand what people who go through identity theft have to go through! The process is incredibly slow. Between opting out, deleting old addresses, ordering credit reports and sending certified mail I think it's been about... 3 months or so. This is with both of us staying on top of the problem and working on it every day or two. For one stupid item!

I remember it and thank you for sharing that site/resources. My wife is going through a similar issue right now and the resources I've uncovered on creditboards.com are astonishingly good.

Congrats on the deletion letter!

It helped because there were a few other people out there in internet-land that were dealing with the same kind of nonsense that she and I are. Also it helped give me the resolve to get it finished. Sometimes a couple of naysayers get you going ("I'll show them it's not impossible...")

Creditboards.com are where I found all the hard advice. Whychat's tips are the greatest. What we did was first do all the opting out and deleting of old addresses. She accomplished that online after buying credit reports. Then we gave that some time to process through their systems. A couple of letters verifying the old addresses were gone arrived some time later. She moved around a lot because her dad is in the Corps of Engineers, so there were a bunch of addresses to get rid of. Then we sent the demand for validation (DV) letters to the two credit bureaus in exactly the font, color, and envelope script that Whychat specifies. Wait a long time and the first letter of two came in. Hopefully the second will arrive soon.

The process is a huge pain but the reward of things being normal again can't be described!
