A highly efficient clothes dryer powered by the sun or wind is more in-line with what I think the future holds.

Just because the solution uses no electricity doesn't mean that it is more efficient. Line drying takes way more time than opening a drier door, stuffing, and pressing a button. Also, line dried clothes set in some nasty distortions to the fabric. oh the irony. --Stu, you must be one of those old-school religious conservatives (Taliban type) who thinks women should be home washing cloths on rocks all day...in a burka.

My argument is simple: folks will use clean, currently "alternative" energy when it's cheaper than current "traditional" energy.

And, folks are more likely to continue to use machine clothes dryers.

Forget environmental aspects and focus on cost and convenience.

Ive seen it myself in a house in Palm Springs. 110F of dry desert heat outside, house full of airconditioning, and a clothes dryer running....

Does this seem sensible to anyone?
And we pretty much feed the rest of the world too, we should cut that out!!! You don't like our guns, don't piss us off as even some of our liberals here like & own guns

not gorilla, bear. You know, bear arms
I prefer to dry clothes on the line. In July, your stuff will be dry in 5 minutes, if you shake them a bit, it will get the worst of the stiffness resolved, can be a bit tougher to iron though, perfect for socks and t shirts

I like guns. I dont care about your guns. Have as many as you want. Shoot your neighbour. Shoot yourself. Dont care. Guns arent the issue. Personal freedoms are.

My question is this- If your personal freedoms are so important, how come you cant hang up a shirt on a line in your backyard, and in the age of the Prius, how can the US squander 6% of its energy usage drying your manky fat arsed shorts?

Because unlike the french and many others in the world, we like to be clean
And in some places here, we get a lot of rain, kind of hard to dry cloths in the rain

Thats a great answer. Thanks, Deep Thought.

Lets leave aside any misplaced sentiment you might have towards the environment or like and consider economics.

6% - and lets assume that number is a complete fabrication of the pinko gloabl warming whale hugging Lunatic Left, lets say 0.5% - of US national energy consumption- drying clothes? Im sure youve heard of the Production Possibility Frontier and Opportunity Cost?
