You have that backwards. (or so recent studies have found) Healthy people use the health care system farrrr more than smokers, drinkers, fatties . . dare-devil motorcycle riders ...

Sammyg2 is right, those who live longer, use far more medical resources than those who play Russian rollett with various vices. ..or partially loaded guns.

you got a link to these studies? I'd be interested to read them because they fly in the face of the docs I've talked with.

Actually Glen is correct.

Longevity is a bigger drain on healthcare.

Food for thought...and trust me on this...the final decades aren't necessarily "golden years". Now I'm 65. Some days, I wish I'd doubled
my intake of marlboros, booze, and most importantly? Loose women!

Not once they get old. Then they start sucking down huge dollars.

Let's face it, increased lifespans create a lot of other problems.

It is not too late to start now. You know what the Chinese said...(lefty green plug) Best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, second best time is today.

I actually read up on this because it is counterintuitive.

The folks with bad habits die with a bit more alacrity and use less resources because they die so much youger. Sounds like utter BS. I can't recall where I saw it, something reputable, WSJ maybe?

yep. And another factor is that people who are fat, or smokers, or heavy drinkers... are likely to avoid going to see a doc because they expect to get only lectures about the obvious. --not much help. Whereas seemingly fit people receive a more positive encounter (and more likely to perceive the doc as someone helpful --future visits likely) It's human nature, I suppose. --tough to want to help someone who seemingly has no interest in helping themselves. --like trying to help those here who refuse to learn anything if it comes from someone on the political right.

It realization started with a Phillip Morris funded study on behalf of the Czech Republic.

Philip Morris Funded Study of Smoking in the Czech Republic
stating that the Czech government had a net gain of $147.1 million from smoking 28nov00

Certainly some diseases lead to more life-time care than for some who lives w/o that disease. But, that is too simple of a model to apply across the board. --Are there any actuaries in the house?

Yeah, we wouldn't want people actually exercising regularly, walking and riding a bike instead of driving their hummer to get a quart of milk. Americans have earned the right to drive whatever they damn well please.

hope I don't scrape the MickyD's drive through window with thing thing...
And they'd blow me to swap places!

This thread explains a lot. I never made the connection before that killing people could be sound economic policy. Therefore, Environmental and Safety Standards should be opposed, Troops sent into battle without protective armor, etc. Death is a good thing, and should be encouraged by the Govt.

In fact we should start a preemptive 'WAR ON HEALTH' . Lower the drinking age to 16 and as soon as kids get their Driver's license they can get drunk too. Give them a free Crotch Rocket as a first vehicle. Repeal Motorcycle Helmet and Seat Belt laws. Make Cigarettes and Booze even more addicting. Encourage Suicide as a Patriotic Duty.

The only question is, how old should they be before we encourage death. I think we could encourage it starting and 40 and make it Mandatory at 50. Maybe a 'Soylent Green' type program. Eliminate all Govt. Health Care in one swoosh, after all, keeping people alive only means they will need Health Care somewhere down the road.

Any other ideas along those lines?
