I was a hell of a lot smarter at 13 than "I" was at 23 and am still working on it some 25 years later . Good luck Ian, that sounds like a "tough one", but even those can work themselves out!

Sorry to go off-topic here, but does anyone beside me think Ian looks like Garrison Keillor?!?

Thanks Keith & all others. And Rika, we fear there might be truth in what you say . . . She does have some of her father's attitude. She has a habit of bluntly speaking her mind in certain circumstances. Our parental enthusiasm has diminished over the last few months.

A good marriage is built on a foundation of lies and deceptions - hows that go again...oh ya...you don't wanna know the truth! You can't handle the truth!

Don't worry too much...it is cultural. Lots of westerners think that Asians are "rude" and "blunt." And the arguing goes with the way the family functions.

Your son has a beautiful wife who is also probably quite smart and stubborn. He'll either learn to deal with it or he won't. Remember that Chinese women run the household - despite the bluster of her father. He probably does get his way in the biz world if he's well connected, but the real power is with her mom.

The staying at home is cultural as well, as it isn't uncommon for multiple generations to be living under the same roof. But they are in America, and it is your house so you should get to make the rules.

I still think that them moving to China isn't a bad idea. Doesn't have to be forever.

I actually agree. It would be a great experience for him. She has friends in HK in the same field & things are booming. I just wouldn't want him beholding to Daddy.

maybe you're not giving him enough credit. Sometimes the best way to learn is in the fire rather than standing beside the frying pan...

Oh Ian. What a fine mess with out any easy solution.

Did I tell you I still live at home. Well sort of, I work in Trenton (2.5hrs away) but when I am not working I stay at my parents house because all my friends still live here. I think they rather enjoy it. I also get all my USPS parcels delivered here, my mom is always kind enough to pay the brokerage fees. I do some car work here, I have left numerous oil stains in the driveway, and as we speak I am drinking some of their Crown Royal. Again, I really don't think they mind, they know that soon enough I will be posted far far away.

Oh course I do help out whenever I can, tomorrow I have to try to get the lawnmower to work again. Have you thought of forcing them to do chores? The grass always needs to be cut and it would be nice that if by the time you get up to go to work the drive way has been shovelled.

Best of luck to you Ian,
-matt

This seems like the biggest no-brainer of all time. Nostatic is right, they need to go to China. There is really no down side. A huge and growing economy. If the lad learns to speak Mandarin, he'll have a usable skill that will keep him employed well for years. He's young, it's the perfect time for an adventure.

I left home at 17 and never looked back. I lived in the West Indies, Europe, New York and Seattle. I wouldn't trade those years for anything. Moving to China with your young wife? An opportunity not to be missed.

I agree. Moving around in my 20s has been one of the best decisions I've made. It's opened up so much opportunity; I can't imagine living like some of my friends did after college. Get married, settle down with a job back in the city they grew up in.

It is about time.

Thats good news, Ian! I suppose..

I just finished reading the whole thread, getting ready to throw in my $0.2.

In any case, disregarding the serious content, your initial post was one of the funniest post I have read in a long time here. You are one heck of a good writer.

Hope it works out for all of you. Might not be over just yet..

Thanks, Livi. You have no idea how happy I am. But I DO realize that it will never be over.
