Those $28 bank overdraft charges and a funny story

A guy I know gave his bankcard to his girlfriend to buy something for his house. Well she ended up using it on this and that's for a few days (not a personal shopping spree, just stuff for the house I guess). She made 25 or so purchases beyond the original item most in the $5-$15 range.

What she didn't know is that he only keeps a small amount in that account and there was only enough in there for the original purchase. So each purchase cost an additional $28! Some of the items were $2-$3

So he now has about $700 in "bounce protection" charges in a matter of 3-4 days on charges of a couple hundred bucks

Is it worth it for him to petition the bank for some mercy or not? I said it's worth a try, what do you think?

And yes it is funny

I doubt it, he's a definite bachelor and I would be shocked if he had another account.

When i was a in my 20's I had one had something similar happen, but I'll man up, it wasn't a woman that did it to me, I blew it on depositing a check.

380 bucks later, I went in, plead mercy, and they gave me a one time wipe out.

I repaid this kindness by switching to another bank a month later. Hey I might have needed another 1 time Mercy wipe. You never know!

Thump him in the head with a rolled up newspaper and yell "NO!! BAD!" Because giving out his card to that girl is something dumber than my dog Snowy would do.

I told him to go in and plead his case. I'll let you know how it goes.

Man that sucks. I'd find another bank though. If I 'overdraft' my LOC kicks in and puts 100 bucks in to my account. The only 'fee' is the 11.5% interest. So in this case the first change that put me negative would have resulted in 100 going to my account and the rest of the changes would have been covered. (Of course I still need to pay back the 100 to the LOC).

Walk into the bank, sign in and sit down with one of the customer service people or bank manager.

They wave fees all the time, just ask.

25 overcharges has got to be a record.

They will wave two out of three at my bank.

Obviously, we can't provide meaningful advice until we see pictures of the girlfriend. I am providing this picture until one becomes available.

.

Oh, and the one-time-mercy wipe out of fees works if there is no history of serial overdrafts, so that would be something to pursue!!

Yep.

I had a similar situation a month ago. My wife called up our (small) credit union and asked the teller to transfer $200 from our joint savings to her checking account. They transfered it to my checking account instead.

She walked in, spoke to the teller who made the mistake, and within a minute had $150 dollar in overdraft fees reversed.
