25% Tax on Porn

I personally don't think this will put a dent in the industry. However, why should this industry be taxed if people can't handle themselves? However, there were some callers who have had family members really addicted to porn causing terrible hardships. Would all this tax money really go to help those people? If this is a solid argument, then I think other industries, like fast food should also have a tax.

What if the porn industry just shut down overnight and not another movie was ever shot. I mean how much porn is there still to be made?

Haven't all the scenarios already been covered? You've got - the pizza delivery man, the cable repair man, the boss and secretary, the teacher and student, the prison gaurd, the pool boy, the son's hot mom...Those movies have already been made about 10k times.

When are they finally going to wrap this thing and admit they're out of ideas?

When will the government stop trying to manipulate the behavior of our society through taxation? I'm sick to death of social engineering. This isn't about pornography, it's about government interference and manipulation. These well meaning bureauocrats are the enemies of liberty.

The "nanny state" is alive and well.

Everybody needs to; drive a hybrid, wear a seatbelt, stop smoking, stop eating fast food, wear a helmet.... just do it and STOP THINKING!

Simply a play for more $$$.

The government is obviously spending more than it's taking in (big surprise) and needs to increase the revenue stream.

And the industry is the perfect target. Who's going to complain too loudly about having to pay higher prices for porn?

I don't think that's completely true. Maybe partly, but just plain taxation is at least half, or more, of it.

As we decline further and further into a socialist state, look for more and more of this type of thing. "Creative" ways to tax and suck (pun intended) money from the citizenry.

They were also proposing a tax on golf lessons and physical training (don't know if that passed, but if it didn't, it will in the future). Like the porn tax, it's not because the govt really cares about the underlying activity. The beast just needs to be fed.

Pretty much what was laid out in Atlas Shrugged 50+ years ago is amazingly coming true.

I've read figures that Americans spend more on porn in a year than on professional sports. And those figures don't even touch on all the free stuff online or file sharing. It's a lot of untapped revenue, but it's also rife with landmines like what constitutes porn.

I concur with Moses. Taxation should have nothing whatsoever to do with trying to channel human behavior, but rather getting revenue to run the state. And I make it a point to try to always do the opposite of what the state wants me to do anyway.

I never said she was hot... like seeing one of your mom's friends.

Besides, it could have been a lot worse, like the guy who ate the prime rib.

A HUGE market and no one will admit to buying/watching it. A perfect target.

What always puzzles me on this is who buys it. You can download more than you can possibly watch for free. Last I checked, 25% of nothing is still nothing!

This is standard procedure for liberals to get more taxes.
They pick a group or organization or industry that the majority of people won't defend, and they tax the crap out of them.
Porn, alcohol, cigarettes, you name it, they tax it. Then they waste the money and cry because they need more.
While I don't approve of pornography I also don't believe the government should tax it, especially when they are doing it for all the wrong reasons.

Kind of like booze and tobacco. Who and what elected offical is going to defend the porn industry? An easy target for taxation.

25% tax on porn would just just cause whats left of it to be outsourced. You notice how a a good deal of porn is already Eastern European girls?

This tax would just mean its going to be all Eastern European girls.

Scenarios may have all been covered... but the world is filled with a lot of chicks I'd like to see in those scenarios!
