Pay Per Mile IS HERE
Today i chatted with my cousin in London...he is the provider of the intellectual capital and is a principle partner/share holder of a subsiderary of RDM in the UK.
As U know he is working on Auto txt...which is a black box that will kill a cars electrical system if it is reported stolen..also it has GPS capabilties. Two MAJOR European car mfgs have allready signed on and will start providing the systems in 2006....AND THEY WILL BE DISCONTINUING LOJAC.....this system has been approved by the British Car Insurers...They didn't get Bentley by the skin of their teeth.... This system will start hitting American shores in those European marques as soon as Dealer service can be provided....so within the next 2 years it's going to happen in the USA... But the REAL News here is...that my cousin is "defining" A PAY PER MILE AUTO INSURANCE system as another capability of Auto txt... It won't be long after that a pay per mile for Road Usage system is also developed.... So as a 5% sharholder in my Cousins Ltd... ![]()

I'll try to find the info, but someone I came in contact with in the past has already developed it. and patented it. It's what will eventually be the basis for the Pay tax by mile not per gallon. This of course benefits the SUV's compared to todays taxing per gallon. as far as black box etc ... that you stated, that has also been developed and for a few hundred bucks, you too can make one. It also will allow you to track your vehicle online ( spouse or friend borrows car ) ALL THIS FOR FREE !!! So, I wouldn't go countin your chickens before they are hatched.. people rarely pay for something they do themselves.. Auto manufacturers included. There will also be decades before a " Standard " is accepted where there is a marketable solution... Sorry for the bad news there... but thats reality

There is little privacy protection for you now -- and less to come.
The auto manufacturers and insurance companies want a record of where you go and how fast you're driving -- especially in case of an accident. Data logging from a GPS is all part of the plan. Many later OBDII cars already have engine monitor tracking so the manufacturer can read exactly how many revolutions your engine has made over the redline in its service life.

The system I currently have in my 944 can log everything..
If I get pulled over, and I know I'm in the right.... while the cop is spewing BS, I just have to throw in a blank CD or flash drive and submit as evidence on the spot... downside... If law enforcement knows there is a system (any system) in place, they can remove/supeona the data, in case of severe accident.

Did you build that system yourself? Pictures, details! It sounds like the kind of toy I'd want to build.

That is awesome. Do you collect performance data with sensors, or is all of your data based on the GPS unit? Are you OpenSourcing any of your stuff?

Through an ODBII interface .. currently other people are working on it. I will eventually be eliminating the analog dials and controls on our cars, and my ultimate goal is eliminating the Bosh DME .. Imagine changing things on the fly as you drive ??? Once I get the main bugs and lisencing stuff out of the way, these will be available for the Porsche community .. As far as the GPS data . I use a standard GPS antenna that splits/duplicates the data stream to many applications . Currently, You can set a speed limit, but in the works right now, it will know the limit on the road and warn you. I currently have it set for 60mph. When you hit it, it says " You have exceded the speed limit " ALSO, to conform with laws in the different states, video images will not be shown while the car is in motion. When everything is done, it will go for $1500 - $2000 depending on features, which is cheap as GPS units are way expensive, plus all the other stuff adds up rather quickly. ** Looking for investors currently ![]() ![]()

I drive my p-car with no radio on and no GPS giving directions...I can appreciate the technology though. Looks and sounds amazing. Wish I had it in my DD

I dunno. One of many factors in the auto insurance underwriting mix. 10 accidents in 20,000 miles -vs- no accidents in 500,000 miles. Risk per mile, do the math. This might affect some more than others.
The gas tax is a per gallon tax and is fair. More mile driven (and bigger and heavier vehicle) more gas used, the more you pay.. 120 Miles in Nevada and you are work. 100 miles in Jersey and you are on vacation in another state... |

But OBDII did not exist prior to 1994. How are you getting that from 944s?? Am I missing something?
