Fulfilling that need for speed
I did the Mario Andretti Racing School last Friday. It was the most heart stopping fun 5 minutes of my life. I did 8 laps and hit a top speed of 150mph. It went by so fast I couldn't believe it was over. I'm going back next year for the 14 lap (or more!) session. This could easily become addictive...good thing it's so far away.
I highly recommend this! Me at 150mph on the front straight of Las Vegas Motor Speedway. ![]()

My wife's uncle and his three boys did the NASCAR racing experience at Texas Motor Speedway a few years back. They absolutely loved it.

I did the Qualifier and added 2 extra laps. It was about $500. Money well spent! How often do you hear somebody say that about anything in Vegas?
Here's the different packages and pricing. http://www.andrettigordon.com/supersaver/

That looks hella fun.
Do they instruct you in technique at all or just suit you up and throw you out there?

I did that in a stock car before the banking was changed. Last lap was a buck forty according to the time slip. You're right, the track goes by real fast. To think that the qualifying speeds of the Indy cars and stock cars is 40 MPH faster is awesome.

and the record qualifying lap at Indy is 80+ mph faster!
I also have a friend (stupid) that's gone that fast (indicated) on his Yamaha FJR from Denver to his farm Kansas. Last edited by tcar; 05-28-2008 at 12:21 PM.. |

They gave me a run down of the car, a ride around the track in a van, and told me what to do and all the things not to do. There's way more to things to not do than to do...i.e. don't touch the brake or you'll lose control, don't touch the clutch till the the laps are complete or you'll lose control, don't hit the wall, don't come down off the banking at speed or you'll lose control, don't make any sudden steering inputs or you'll lose control, don't stand on the gas or the tires will break lose and you'll lose control, don't pass the instructor, don't draft the instructor...etc. The main things they stressed were to trust the car and relax. You're behind the instructor the whole time, so you just follow his line. As you feel more comfortable you close on the instructor and he speeds up...to a point. 150mph is the max for the Qualifier package.
